East Africa Safari Itineraries: 7, 10 and 14-Day Ideas

A seven-day trip suits one country, ten days allows two regions, and fourteen days can link two countries with time to rest.

These outlines are starting points. Adjust them to season, interests and budget with your operator.

Always leave a buffer day before international flights.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

How

How Long Each Leg Should Be

Spend at least two nights in each major park so you are not constantly packing. Primate treks need a full day, with travel before and after. Long road transfers of six hours or more deserve a lighter next day. If you fly between parks, check baggage limits and allow time for delays. A route that looks efficient on a map may feel exhausting in practice, so trust experienced planners.

Customising

Customising an Itinerary

Tell your operator your interests, fitness, group composition and any must-see animals. Ask for alternatives, such as swapping a long drive for a short flight or adding a rest day by a lake. Good itineraries also leave room for spontaneous moments: an extra hour with a lion pride or a stop at a village market. See first-time safari guide for pacing advice.

Seven-Day

Seven-Day Variations

For gorillas, spend a night in Entebbe, two in Bwindi and the rest in Queen Elizabeth or Kibale. For the plains, base in the Mara for four nights, add Lake Nakuru and return to Nairobi. For Tanzania, take Tarangire, Ngorongoro and a short Serengeti stay. For Rwanda, combine Kigali, Volcanoes and Akagera. Each variation can be tuned for fitness, interests and budget. If you prefer fewer bases, stay longer in one park and use full-day drives. A clear plan avoids the common mistake of trying to squeeze in too many parks, which leaves little time to enjoy any of them. See combinations.

Seasonal

Seasonal Itinerary Tweaks

During the migration, favour the Mara and northern Serengeti. During calving, favour the southern Serengeti. In the rainy season, plan flexible days and favour lodges with indoor activities. In peak dry months, start drives early to avoid heat and dust. Shifting a route by a few days can change your wildlife luck, so talk to your operator about timing.

Final

Final Checks

Before booking, confirm distances, flight times and activity availability. Ask what happens if plans change. Check that key permits and lodge reservations are confirmed in writing. Share your itinerary with family, and keep copies. Good planning leaves you free to enjoy the journey.
