Things to Do in the Serengeti: Game Drives, Balloons, Walks and Cultural Visits

Serengeti activities include game drives, sunrise balloon flights, walks on private concessions, night drives where permitted, cultural visits and photography safaris.

National park rules limit some activities, but private concessions and nearby areas open more. Most travellers combine drives with one special experience.

Plan according to your interests and camps.

Choosing

Choosing Between Activities

Balloon safaris suit those who enjoy views and special occasions. Walks suit those who like detail and quiet. Night drives suit lovers of nocturnal wildlife. Standard drives suit everyone. Think about fitness, budget and time, and ask your operator which options your camp offers.

Cultural

Cultural Experiences Near the Park

Outside the park, communities such as the Maasai and Ikoma live alongside wildlife. Visits to schools, markets or craft cooperatives can be arranged with community consent. Tipping is not always expected, but buying crafts supports families.

Planning

Planning a Balanced Stay

Spread special activities across your stay and keep time for relaxation. Mix early starts with slower mornings. Remember that the Serengeti rewards patience, so avoid cramming too many activities. See Serengeti wildlife guide.

Safety

Safety and Etiquette

Stay inside vehicles on game drives, follow ranger instructions on walks and keep a respectful distance from animals. Avoid loud noises and flash photography at night. Dress in neutral colours. Respect park rules for the safety of both visitors and wildlife.

Balloon

Balloon Flights, Walks and Night Experiences

Beyond the standard game drive, the Serengeti offers several ways to see the plains differently. A dawn hot-air balloon flight drifts silently over the grassland and ends with a bush breakfast, giving a view of herds and river lines that a vehicle cannot match. Guided walks in permitted areas focus on tracks, dung, insects and plants, and teach you to read the bush at a slower pace. Some camps arrange night drives or sundowners in designated areas, while visits to rock outcrops called kopjes reveal hyraxes, agamas and the occasional lion lookout. Mobile camps put you close to the herds in migration season, with the sounds of the night close at hand. Ask your operator which activities are available at your chosen camp, because rules differ by area and season, and book popular options such as balloon flights well ahead.
