How to Get to Volcanoes National Park: Kigali to Musanze, Kinigi Headquarters and Cross-Border Routes

Volcanoes National Park is about a two to three hour drive north-west of Kigali on a good tarmac road through Musanze, with the park headquarters at Kinigi.

The journey from the capital is one of the easiest approaches to a major gorilla destination anywhere. The road winds through the green hills of Rwanda's northern province before the Virunga volcanoes rise ahead.

Because gorilla briefings start early, most travellers sleep near the park the night before their trek.

Overview

Driving From Kigali

The road leaves Kigali, passes through Gakenke hills and arrives in Musanze, a market town at the foot of the volcanoes. Surfaces are good and signs are clear, but trucks and motorbikes slow progress, so allow generous time. Day trips from Kigali are possible, and the option is covered in Rwanda one-day gorilla trek from Kigali and gorilla tours from Kigali. Many visitors prefer to stay overnight to avoid a rushed start.

Kinigi

Kinigi Headquarters and the Morning Briefing

Trekkers gather at the park headquarters at Kinigi early in the morning, where guides assign groups, check permits and give a briefing. Your driver-guide will know when to leave, and you should plan to arrive before the stated time. Lodges around Musanze make this easier. See things to do in Musanze for ideas on how to spend the rest of your stay.

Arriving

Arriving From Uganda

Travellers coming from south-western Uganda can cross at Cyanika near Kisoro and continue to Musanze, a shorter route than going via Kigali. See Kisoro to Volcanoes National Park and Kabale to Kigali for border and road details, and Uganda and Rwanda safari vacation for ideas on combining both countries.

Where

Where to Stay

Lodges around Musanze and Kinigi range from simple guesthouses to luxury camps with views of the volcanoes. Choosing a base close to the park saves time on trekking day and lets you enjoy the evening scenery. If you arrive from Kigali the day before, you can settle in, prepare your gear and meet your guide. Sleeping at altitude can also help your body adjust before a strenuous trek, which matters if you plan to climb Bisoke or Karisimbi later in your stay. See hotels in Kigali for the capital leg of the trip.

Combining

Combining Routes

A popular loop links Volcanoes with Lake Kivu and Nyungwe, then returns to Kigali, or heads east to Akagera. The Rwanda itineraries page shows how to sequence these. Allow time for rest days after a demanding trek rather than rushing to the next destination.

Practical

Practical Tips

Carry your passport for border crossings, drinking water, snacks and a warm layer in the vehicle. Rwanda bans plastic bags, so avoid bringing them. For visas and money, check Rwanda visa, money and practical information, and read the getting around East Africa overview for broader transport planning.
