Gorilla Tours From Kigali: Transfers, Day Trips and Short Itineraries

Gorilla tours from Kigali reach Volcanoes National Park in two to three hours, which makes Rwanda the easiest place in Africa to combine a city arrival with a gorilla trek.

Kigali International Airport is Rwanda's only international airport, and the road north to Musanze is paved and well maintained. Most gorilla tours leave from the city, either on the same day as arrival or after a night of rest.

This page explains the transfer, how itineraries of different lengths look and how to plan around flights.

This guide is part of our East Africa travel guides. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Day

Day Trips and Short Stays

Volcanoes National Park lies roughly two to three hours from Kigali, so a gorilla trek can be done as a long day trip, although an overnight stay makes the experience less rushed. Early departures, lunch boxes and a comfortable vehicle help. Consider staying near the park the night before.

What

What Your Package Should Include

Check whether permits, transport, park fees, guiding and meals are included. Confirm pick-up times and whether the operator provides gaiters or walking sticks. See 1-day gorilla trek from Kigali.

What

What to Bring

Pack sturdy boots, long sleeves and trousers, a rain jacket, gloves, water, snacks and a camera without flash. A hat and sunscreen help during the drive. Carry your passport and permit documents. Porters can be hired at the trailhead, and a walking stick is often provided. Tip porters and guides if you are satisfied.

Alternatives

Alternatives to Day Trips

If you want a calmer experience, stay overnight near the park the day before. Add Lake Kivu or golden monkeys for variety. A slower plan costs more time but reduces stress, lets you enjoy local hospitality and gives you a margin for weather delays.

Practical

Practical Tips

Carry passports for park check-in, keep a day buffer before flights and pack for rain. Read Rwanda visa, money and practical information.
