Overview

About Rwanda

Rwanda is a compact, hilly country in the heart of Africa, known as the land of a thousand hills. It is best known for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, but it also protects chimpanzees and other primates in Nyungwe, savannah wildlife in Akagera and a memorial landscape in Kigali that explains the country's recent history.

This page collects our ready-made Rwanda itineraries and every Rwanda destination guide on the site. Each card below links to the main guide for that park or area, and to the detailed pages on where to stay, how to get there, the best time to visit, wildlife, birding and activities. Rwanda is also easy to join with Uganda on one trip, so we link to the combination guides that do this.

Rwanda suits travellers with limited time. Distances are short, the road network is good, and Kigali is a clean, easy gateway city. Many itineraries last three to eight days and combine gorilla trekking with a second park or a few days on Lake Kivu. For the comparison most travellers want first, read Uganda vs Rwanda gorilla trekking and then the Rwanda travel guide.

Where to Go in Rwanda: Choosing Your Regions

Rwanda is small, so a short trip can cover several areas. The north-west, around Musanze and Volcanoes National Park, is the centre of gorilla trekking. The south-west holds Nyungwe, the large montane forest known for chimpanzees and canopy walks. The east is savannah country around Akagera, and the western shore of Lake Kivu offers a quieter end to a trip. Kigali, in the centre, links them all.

A typical itinerary starts with a night in Kigali, then moves to Musanze for gorilla trekking, then to Lake Kivu, and finally to Nyungwe or back to Kigali. If you are travelling with Uganda, the border at Kabale and Kisoro links Rwanda with Bwindi and the Lake Bunyonyi area. Our planning pages cover three, five and seven-day itineraries, four days, six days, eight days and twelve days.

Rwanda joins easily with its neighbours. See the Uganda and Rwanda gorilla combination, the Rwanda and Tanzania combination and the Lake Kivu, Nyungwe and Volcanoes combination.

Best Time to Visit Rwanda

Rwanda has two dry seasons, roughly June to September and December to February. These are the easiest months for hiking and for gorilla trekking, because forest trails are drier. The long rains fall from about March to May and the short rains in October and November; trekking is still possible but paths can be muddy and steep, and the scenery is at its greenest.

Gorilla permits are limited and often sell out in the dry season, so booking early is wise. For detail, see our best time to visit Rwanda page, the Volcanoes best-time guide and the Nyungwe best-time guide.

Getting to Rwanda and Getting Around

Most visitors fly into Kigali International Airport, and the main parks are reached by road: Musanze is roughly a two-hour drive, Akagera about two and a half hours and Nyungwe several hours. Travel between Uganda and Rwanda is also possible overland through Kabale and Kisoro. Our route pages cover Kigali to Musanze, Kigali to Akagera, Kigali to Nyungwe, Kigali to Rubavu and Kampala to Kigali.

Practical guides include visa and money, health, tipping, fitness for trekking and safari safety. Permit and park fees are set by Rwanda's authorities and change, so we check current rates when we prepare your quote.

People, Culture and Food in Rwanda

Rwanda's culture is shaped by shared language, music and cooperative traditions. Visitors can see Intore dance, craft cooperatives and community tourism near the parks. For the country's recent history, read our guide to the Kigali Genocide Memorial and other memorial sites. Other guides include Kinyarwanda phrases for travellers and Rwanda culture and heritage.

Gorilla Trekking and Primates in Rwanda

Gorilla trekking is the main reason most visitors come to Rwanda. The mountain gorillas of the Virunga range live in forested volcano slopes, and habituated groups are visited in small numbers each day. Your guide briefs the group before the trek, trackers locate the family, and time with the gorillas is limited to protect them. How long the walk takes depends on where the family has moved overnight, so fitness and sturdy footwear matter; read a day in the life of a gorilla trek and how gorilla families and trekking groups work.

Rwanda also offers chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe, golden monkey tracking in Volcanoes and colobus monkeys in the forest, so a primate-focused trip can run well beyond a single day of gorillas. For permit rules and costs, see permits and trekking rules and what a gorilla trek includes. Travellers deciding between countries should read Uganda vs Rwanda gorilla trekking.

Combining Rwanda with Uganda

Rwanda and Uganda share the Virunga region and the Bwindi forests, which makes the two countries natural partners. A common route runs from Kampala to Bwindi or Lake Bunyonyi, crosses the border near Kabale or Kisoro, and finishes in Kigali or Musanze, or follows the same line in reverse. Overland travel is straightforward with an arranged transfer; see Kampala to Kigali, Kabale to Kigali and Kisoro to Volcanoes National Park.

Our Uganda and Rwanda gorilla combination guide sets out routes, border notes, best times and sample itineraries, and the Uganda and Rwanda safari vacation page shows the combined trips we offer.
