Rwanda Trip With Children: Family Travel, Age Rules and What Works

Rwanda suits families well because distances are short, roads are good and Kigali, Akagera and Lake Kivu offer plenty for younger children, although gorilla trekking itself is reserved for older teenagers and adults.

Rwanda is compact, clean and generally easy to move around, which makes it one of the gentler countries in East Africa for a family holiday. Journeys between Kigali, the volcanoes, Lake Kivu and Akagera are measured in hours rather than days, so children spend less time strapped into a vehicle.

The main planning point is that the headline activity, mountain gorilla trekking, carries a minimum age. This guide explains how to build a trip where every member of the family has something to look forward to, with older children trekking while younger ones enjoy other experiences.

This guide is part of our Uganda facts and travel information guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Age Rules in General

Rwanda sets a minimum age for gorilla trekking, and at the time of writing it is widely given as fifteen years. Rules for other activities vary: golden monkey tracking, chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe and the canopy walkway each have their own conditions. Because regulations can be revised, ask your operator to confirm the current requirement with the Rwanda Development Board before you book, and carry proof of age for every child. See Rwanda gorilla permits and trekking rules for how permits work in general.

Building

Building a Family Itinerary

The most successful family trips in Rwanda are short on driving and long on variety. A typical shape is two nights in Kigali, two or three near the volcanoes, and a stay at Lake Kivu or Akagera to finish. Children who cannot trek can spend the gorilla morning with a guide on a village walk, a cultural visit or simply resting at the lodge while parents and older siblings trek.

If your family includes a teenager of trekking age, consider scheduling the gorilla day early in the trip while energy is high. Our Rwanda safari itineraries of three, five and seven days and the five and ten day itineraries are good starting points that can be adapted for children.

Pace

Pace, Comfort and Daily Rhythm

Children cope best with a predictable rhythm: a morning activity, a long lunch and rest at the lodge, then a gentler afternoon. Early starts are part of safari life, so keep bedtimes sensible and bring familiar snacks. Travel by private vehicle with your own guide rather than a shared tour so that you can stop when needed. Choose accommodation with family rooms or connecting rooms, and ask whether meals can be adapted for fussy eaters. Rwanda has a strong reputation for cleanliness and order, which many parents find reassuring, but you should still keep a close eye on children near water, steep paths and wildlife.

Health

Health, Safety and Practicalities

Speak to a doctor or travel clinic well before departure about malaria prevention, routine vaccinations and any certificates required for entry. Children need their own advice, because some medicines are age or weight dependent. Use insect repellent in the evenings, carry sun protection and encourage regular handwashing. Drink bottled or properly filtered water.

See the East Africa health and vaccinations guide and Rwanda visa, money and practical information. Check your own government travel advice and official Rwandan sources for the latest entry rules.

Combining

Combining Rwanda With Other Countries

Families often pair Rwanda with Uganda or Tanzania. A short Rwanda trip can sit alongside a longer Tanzanian wildlife safari, which is described in Rwanda and Tanzania safari, and some families choose a beach finish in Zanzibar. For wider planning ideas see East Africa safari with teenagers and family safari packages in Africa.

What

What to Pack for the Family

Pack lightweight long sleeves and trousers, a warm layer for cool highland evenings, a waterproof jacket, sturdy shoes, hats, sunscreen, binoculars sized for small hands and a few games or books for the car. Rwanda restricts single-use plastic bags, so avoid bringing them. Teenagers who will trek should read what to wear for gorilla trekking in Rwanda. A general checklist is in the East Africa packing list.
