East Africa Safari Packing List: What to Pack for Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda

Pack layers in neutral colours, sturdy shoes, sun protection, binoculars and a soft duffel bag for East Africa safaris.

Days start cool, warm up by noon and cool again at dusk, so layers work best. Forest treks need long trousers and gloves, while plains safaris need sun protection.

This list suits all four countries.

This guide is part of our Uganda facts and travel information guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Packing

Packing by Activity

Gorilla trekking calls for long sleeves, long trousers, gaiters or socks pulled over trousers, waterproof layers and light gloves. Plains safaris need sun hats, sunglasses and a warm fleece for early drives. Boat trips add a windproof layer and dry bag. Beach extensions need swimwear and light cover-ups. Divide items into packing cubes so you can find what you need in a vehicle or tent.

Things

Things People Forget

Many travellers forget a universal adapter, spare camera batteries, a reusable water bottle, insect repellent, a small first-aid kit and copies of their documents. Leave plastic bags at home, because several East African countries restrict them. Laundry is cheap and quick at most lodges, so you can pack less. See plugs, SIM cards and phones for connectivity tips.

Packing

Packing Light

Soft bags, quick-dry clothing and layers cut weight. Wear your heaviest shoes while travelling and keep valuables, medication and electronics in carry-on luggage. Check airline and bush-flight limits before you pack, because small aircraft may allow only around fifteen kilograms in a soft bag.

Seasonal

Seasonal Adjustments

In rainy months add a light poncho, quick-dry trousers and extra socks. In dry months add a buff or scarf for dust. In highland areas such as Bwindi, Kigali and Arusha, evenings can be cool enough for a fleece or light jacket. Coastal trips need lighter fabrics and sun protection. Review the forecast a week before departure and adjust.

Electronics

Electronics and Documents

Pack a universal adapter, a power bank, spare memory cards, a head torch and a dry bag. Keep passports, tickets and insurance in a waterproof pouch. Save PDF copies of permits, vouchers and emergency numbers offline on your phone.

Packing

Packing Mistakes to Avoid

Common errors include overpacking, bringing new unbroken boots, forgetting adapters, leaving medication in checked bags and packing bright colours. Test your bag by carrying it for ten minutes. Lay out clothes, then remove a third. Keep valuables and essentials in your carry-on, and leave room for souvenirs.
