Safari Duffel Bags and Luggage: Soft Bags, Weight Limits and What to Pack

A soft-sided duffel bag with no wheels or hard frame is the best safari luggage, because it fits in vehicles and light aircraft and stays within strict weight limits.

Safari vehicles have limited space, and light aircraft between parks have tight baggage rules, usually in the range of about fifteen kilograms per person including hand luggage. Hard suitcases do not squeeze into holds, so soft bags are preferred.

This page explains what to look for in luggage and how to pack light.

Packing

Packing Light

  • Choose neutral clothes that mix and match.
  • Use lodge laundry on longer trips.
  • Leave extra luggage at a hotel in Entebbe, Nairobi or Arusha if possible.
  • Pack liquids in small bottles.
Daypacks

Daypacks

A small daypack carries water, camera, jacket, sunscreen and binoculars. For gorilla treks, a waterproof daypack is useful, and porters can carry it.

Airline

Airline and Aircraft Rules

Check airline and bush flight limits before you pack. See airports and international flights and what to wear on safari.

Size

Size and Material

Soft duffels in the thirty to sixty litre range are practical. Choose durable, water-resistant fabric, sturdy zips and handles that can be carried by porters. Avoid hard suitcases, which cannot be squeezed into small aircraft holds.

Organising

Organising Your Bag

Use packing cubes, keep heavy items at the bottom and place a small daypack inside for excursions. Label your bag clearly and add a ribbon or strap to spot it easily.

Security

Security and Care

Use a small lock, avoid leaving bags unattended and keep valuables in your hand luggage. Dry bags protect gear on boats.

Daypacks

Daypacks and Camera Bags

A daypack should hold water, a light jacket, binoculars, camera and sunscreen. Choose padded bags that keep out dust, and consider a bean bag for steady photos. Keep batteries and cards in a protective pouch.

Airline

Airline Rules

Check the baggage allowance for both international and domestic flights. Bush flights often limit weight and require soft bags. Plan to leave non-essential items at your base hotel.

Buying

Buying Tips

Look for waterproof zips, reinforced stitching, shoulder straps and wheels that do not add excess weight. Test the bag by lifting it when full. Choose a colour that is easy to spot on carousels. Compare capacity with airline limits, and avoid overpacking. A good bag lasts many trips.

Packing

Packing Smart

Roll clothes, use compression bags and put heavy items near the handles. Keep shoes in separate bags. Label compartments, and pack an extra foldable bag for souvenirs. Weigh your bag before every flight to avoid fees.
