Akagera in the Dry Season: Waterholes, Open Views and Big Game Drives

In the dry months, mainly June to September, Akagera's grass thins, animals gather near the lakes and the park's savanna, lakes and wetlands deliver some of the easiest game viewing in Rwanda.

Akagera lies in eastern Rwanda along the Tanzanian border, and its mix of open savanna, acacia woodland, lakes and papyrus swamps changes noticeably with the seasons. In the dry period the landscape turns golden, and wildlife concentrates where there is water.

This page covers wildlife behaviour, roads, activities and who the dry season suits. Compare Akagera in the rainy season and see the wider Akagera best-time guide.

This guide is part of our Uganda month-by-month and seasonal guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Landscape and Conditions

The dry months bring warm days, cool mornings and a dusty, golden savanna. Grass shortens, which opens sightlines across the plains, and many seasonal pools shrink, drawing animals towards the permanent lakes and river. Mornings and evenings are the best times to be out, because midday heat sends animals into the shade. Dry-season haze may soften distant views, and wind can lift dust on the tracks. Patterns vary, so use the months as a general guide.

Wildlife

Wildlife Behaviour

Zebra, giraffe, buffalo, topi, impala, waterbuck and elephants concentrate near water, and predators follow. Lions, reintroduced to the park, and black rhinos, also reintroduced, are the headline species for many visitors, though sightings are never guaranteed and rhinos are elusive. Hippos and crocodiles are easy to see on the lakes. Leopards and hyenas are mainly nocturnal, so night drives add chances. See the Akagera wildlife guide.

Game

Game Drives and Boat Trips

Dry-season game drives follow loops that pass the lakes and open plains, and well-informed guides time visits to waterholes. Boat trips on Lake Ihema give close views of hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds in a calm setting. Night drives with a ranger reveal nocturnal animals. See game drives, boat trips and night safaris and boat safari in Akagera.

Roads

Roads and Getting There

Tracks inside the park are firmer and faster in the dry months, and the transfer from Kigali is straightforward by road. Dust can build up behind vehicles, so keep windows closed as needed. See Kigali to Akagera and how to get to Akagera.

Birding

Birding and Photography

Waterbirds, raptors and savanna species are visible, though many migrants are absent in the dry months. Photographers benefit from open views and warm early light, and long lenses help when animals are at the water. Protect cameras from dust with a cover and cloth. See Akagera birding for habitats and species.

What

What to Pack

Light, neutral clothing, a warm layer for early mornings, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, binoculars and insect repellent. A scarf helps with dust. See the East Africa packing list and health and vaccinations for malaria guidance from a clinician.

Planning

Planning Your Days

A sensible dry-season rhythm is an early game drive soon after the gates open, a long rest through the heat of midday, and a second drive in the late afternoon that finishes with the evening light over the lakes. A boat trip fits well in the middle of the day on Lake Ihema, when the water is calmer and hippos are easy to see from the shallows. Two full nights allow a morning drive, a boat trip and a night drive without rushing, and a third night gives room to revisit the best areas. Ask your operator which loops pass the lakes and whether a ranger-guide can join your vehicle.

Who

Who the Dry Season Suits

The drier months suit first-time safari-goers, photographers and anyone combining Akagera with gorilla trekking. It is also a busier period, so book lodging early. See Akagera itineraries, where to stay in Akagera and Rwanda in August.
