Kigali to Bwindi: Crossing from Rwanda into Uganda for Gorilla Trekking
Bwindi in south-western Uganda can be reached from Kigali by road via one of two border crossings, a long day to be planned with your sector in mind.
Many travellers use Kigali as their entry point for Uganda gorilla trekking because of its airport and road links.
This page explains the routes. See also Kabale to Kigali and the Uganda and Rwanda route and border guide.

What to Book
Permits and transfers.
Choosing the Border
Katuna, on the road to Kabale, is the traditional route for the Rubanda and Ruhija sectors, while Cyanika, near Musanze, leads to Kisoro and the southern sectors of Rushaga and Nkuringo. Both crossings are manageable, but opening hours, vehicle paperwork and queues vary, so your operator should handle the details. Do not assume your Rwandan vehicle can drive across without arrangements; operators often change vehicles at the border. See the Kabale town guide and the Kisoro town guide.
Which Sector Fits
Sector choice depends on your permit, which is tied to a sector and date. From Kigali the southern sectors of Rushaga and Nkuringo are usually closer by road via Cyanika and Kisoro, while Buhoma and Ruhija need longer onward drives. Hill roads are winding, so allow extra time. See the Bwindi sectors guide and the Rushaga and Nkuringo route.
Paperwork and Planning
Check visa requirements in advance, since East Africa visa arrangements differ by country and can change. Carry vaccination documents if required and keep permit confirmations accessible. Book early, as permits and accommodation near Bwindi are limited. See the East Africa visa guide and gorilla permit rules.
A Sample Plan
Day one drives from Kigali to the Bwindi area, with a night close to your sector. Day two is the gorilla trek, and day three returns to Kigali or continues to Lake Bunyonyi. A flexible buffer day suits those with international flights. See Bwindi to Lake Bunyonyi.
What the Journey Is Like
The road leaves Kigali through hills, tea slopes and busy trading centres, with the Virunga volcanoes appearing on the northern route. Towns such as Musanze and Kabale offer food and cash machines, and the border roads are lined with small shops. The Ugandan side climbs through terraced hillsides with scenic views, and the last stretch to Bwindi's sector gates is on narrower tracks that suit a 4x4. Expect a long, rewarding day with plenty to see from the window.
Who Should Use This Route
The Kigali approach suits travellers combining Rwanda and Uganda, those arriving on international flights into Kigali, and groups wanting a land link between the two gorilla destinations. If you only plan one gorilla trek, compare the logistics with other options. See the Uganda and Rwanda gorilla combination guide and Mgahinga versus Bwindi.
What to Ask Your Operator
Ask which border will be used, how the vehicle change works, what time you should leave Kigali, where lunch is planned and which sector gate you will reach on the first evening. Confirm that your permit date and sector are matched to the journey, that porters can be arranged, and that your accommodation is close to the starting point. Check what happens if the border is slow or if rain affects the final road. A clear answer to each question prevents surprises on a long day.
