Samburu in the Rainy Season: Green Scrub, Migrant Birds and Quiet Tracks
Rain transforms Samburu from pale scrub into green country, scatters wildlife away from the river, brings migrant birds and leaves the tracks quiet, so the green season rewards patient travellers who value atmosphere over easy sightings.
Samburu receives less rain than most safari areas, yet when it comes the change is striking. Grass shoots up within days, dry riverbeds fill and the reserve takes on a freshness that surprises people who know only the dusty months. Showers are often short and heavy, followed by bright, clear air.
This page covers what the rainy season means for wildlife, tracks, birds and photography, and how to pack. Compare it with Samburu in the dry season and read the Kenya long rains guide and the short rains guide for the national picture.
This guide is part of our Uganda month-by-month and seasonal guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

The Two Wet Periods
| Period | What to expect |
|---|---|
| March to May | The long rains, with the heaviest showers and the greenest scrub by the end |
| June to October | The main dry season, covered on the dry-season page |
| November and December | The short rains, lighter and shorter, with bright intervals |
| January and February | A drier spell, often with a fresh green landscape |
Rain in the north is uneven. One area may be drenched while another stays dry, and a storm can pass in an hour. Travellers who accept changeable weather are usually rewarded with dramatic skies and cool, clean air.
Wildlife Spreads Out
With water lying across the landscape, elephants and plains animals no longer depend on the river and move through the wider scrub. Sightings take more searching, and tall grass can hide smaller animals. The reward is behaviour: young animals appear, predators work the dense cover and elephants feed in fresh growth. Read the Samburu wildlife guide for the usual residents and the special five guide for the northern species.
Tracks and Rivers
Showers can make sections of track slippery, and dry watercourses may flow briefly after heavy rain, which can delay drives. Guides know which routes to avoid and will adjust the plan, so allow flexibility in your schedule. Roads from the south are described in the Nairobi to Samburu route guide. Flying in is also possible, as discussed in how to get to Samburu.
Birding in the Green Season
Rain triggers breeding in resident birds, and Palearctic migrants add variety from roughly November to April. Weavers show breeding plumage, raptors are active after storms and waterbirds visit temporary pools. This is a strong time for a keen birder, particularly with a guide. See Samburu birding and the Kenya migrant birds guide.
Photography After Rain
Washed air gives crisp light, clouds add depth to landscapes and the green backdrop makes animals stand out. Dust is minimal, so lenses stay cleaner. Overcast mornings soften harsh shadows, although low light calls for a higher ISO. Protect equipment from sudden showers with a rain cover. More advice appears in the photography safari guide.
Packing for Showers
Bring a light waterproof jacket, quick-drying trousers, closed shoes with grip and a dry bag for cameras. Insect repellent is useful near standing water, and a warm layer helps on cool, damp mornings. Sun protection is still needed between showers. Check the packing list and the health and vaccinations guide for malaria precautions.
Who the Green Season Suits
It suits birders, photographers who love moody skies, repeat visitors and travellers who prefer quiet camps. It is less suited to those on a short first trip who want easy sightings. Pair it with other green-season stops using the Kenya green season itinerary, and plan stays with where to stay in Samburu.
