How to Get to Samburu: Road From Nairobi via Nanyuki and Isiolo, Flights and Routes

Samburu is a full day by road from Nairobi, usually via Nanyuki and Isiolo, or a short flight to the reserve's airstrips.

The reserve lies in northern Kenya, beyond Mount Kenya and the Laikipia plateau. The journey passes highlands, farmland and then dry scrub, and it is part of the experience of heading into a different Kenya.

Most travellers choose road or air according to how they combine Samburu with other places.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

The Road Route

Vehicles leave Nairobi and pass through the central highlands to Nanyuki, with Mount Kenya often visible, then continue via Isiolo and Archer's Post to the reserve gates. The roads are generally good until the final stretch, which is rougher. Plan an early start with a lunch stop on the way. See Mount Kenya guide for background on the mountain you will pass.

Flying

Flying to Samburu

Scheduled and charter flights serve airstrips within and near the reserves, typically from Wilson Airport in Nairobi, and some connect with Laikipia or the Masai Mara. Flying cuts the day to a short hop and lets you see the Great Rift Valley below. Luggage allowances are limited, so use soft bags. See flying safaris.

Samburu

Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba

The three adjoining reserves share the river and a similar landscape, and gate choice affects your route. Ask your operator which entrance serves your lodge, and check whether crossing between reserves is part of your plan.

Combining

Combining With Laikipia and the Mara

Samburu pairs well with Laikipia on the way north and with the Masai Mara by air. Read about Laikipia and Ol Pejeta and the Nairobi to Masai Mara guide for onward options.

Practical

Practical Tips

Carry water, sun protection and a light jacket for early starts, and confirm your transfers. For general advice see getting around East Africa and Kenya practical information.

Planning

Planning Your Days and Pace

Because the journey north takes most of a day, it makes sense to allow at least two nights in Samburu so you are not simply arriving and leaving. Many travellers break the road trip with a night in the Mount Kenya or Laikipia area, which shortens the final leg and adds new scenery. Others fly in and spend the saved hours on an extra game drive. Roads can be dusty, and security arrangements for the northern routes can change, so rely on a reputable operator for current advice. Consider the best time to visit Samburu, and see Kenya safari itineraries for sample routings that include the north. If you are arriving by air from abroad, read flights to East Africa.

Security

Security and Local Advice

Northern Kenya is remote, and conditions on the road can change with the seasons and with local circumstances. Travelling with an experienced driver-guide who knows the route, and following their advice on timings and stops, is the sensible approach. Fuel up in the larger towns, keep a full water supply and avoid driving after dark. Good operators monitor conditions and will adjust the plan if needed. For wider preparation, read the health and vaccinations guide and the visa guide.
