How to Get to Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate: Road, Train and Combined Routes

Lake Naivasha lies roughly two hours by road north-west of Nairobi, on the main route into the Rift Valley, which makes it one of the easiest safari stops to reach.

The journey climbs out of Nairobi, crosses the high ground above the Rift Valley and then descends in a long sweep to the lakeside. On a clear day, the first view of the valley floor is a highlight in itself.

Naivasha is also a natural link between Nairobi, Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara, so many travellers pass through it without planning to. This guide covers the routes, the gates and the combinations.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

The Road From Nairobi

Safari vehicles leave Nairobi on the main highway towards Nakuru, climb through the highlands and stop at a viewpoint overlooking the Rift Valley. From there the road descends to the valley floor and runs alongside the lake. Traffic on the outskirts of Nairobi can be heavy, so leaving before the morning rush saves time. Heavy trucks use this road, which means patience is needed on the climbs. If you are comparing journeys across the country, see getting around East Africa.

Rail

Rail, Bus and Matatu Options

Public transport links Nairobi and Naivasha, including buses and shared matatus, and a modern railway service has also been extended in the direction of the Rift Valley. These options suit budget and independent travellers, though you will need local transport for the final stretch to the lakeshore and to the park gates. Confirm current timetables before travelling, as schedules change. For guidance on independent travel, see self-drive safari in East Africa.

Reaching

Reaching Hell's Gate

Hell's Gate National Park has more than one entrance, and the one you use depends on where you are staying and what you plan to do. Cyclists and walkers often enter at the main gate near the lake road, while visitors heading for the geothermal area or the far end of the gorge may choose a different gate. Ask your lodge or operator which entrance suits your plan, and carry your tickets and identification.

Combining

Combining Naivasha With Other Stops

Naivasha fits well into the standard Rift Valley loop. From here the road continues to Lake Nakuru, which is known for birds and rhinos, and onward to the Masai Mara, which usually takes a long day by road. It also works as a gentle first night after landing in Nairobi, because the altitude and the calm lakeshore help with jet lag. See Lake Nakuru National Park and Nairobi to the Masai Mara.

Practical

Practical Tips for the Journey

Carry water, sunscreen and snacks, and keep cash for small purchases in town. Roadside stalls sell fruit and crafts, and the Rift Valley viewpoint is a good photo stop. If you are arriving internationally, check the visa guide and the Kenya entry and practical information page before you travel.
