How to Get to Lake Nakuru: Road From Nairobi, Routes via Naivasha and Gates

Lake Nakuru is roughly two to three hours by road from Nairobi, usually via the Rift Valley escarpment and Naivasha, which makes it one of Kenya's easiest parks to reach.

The park lies on the edge of Nakuru town in the Great Rift Valley. It is close enough to Nairobi for a long day trip, but it is better enjoyed with an overnight stay.

Its position between Nairobi and the Masai Mara makes it a natural first or middle stop on many itineraries.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

The Road From Nairobi

Vehicles climb out of Nairobi, descend into the Rift Valley with a famous viewpoint over the floor, and continue past Lake Naivasha towards Nakuru. Traffic and roadworks can affect timings, so start early. The route is scenic and gives a sense of the geography that shaped the lakes. For context, read the Great Rift Valley overview.

Choosing

Choosing a Gate

The park has more than one entrance, and the main gate is closest to the town. Other gates serve different sides and may suit lodges in the surrounding area. Your operator will advise which to use, and the choice can change the length of your game drive.

Stopping

Stopping at Naivasha

Many itineraries break the journey at Lake Naivasha for a boat ride, a walk at Hell's Gate or lunch. See Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate for ideas.

Onward

Onward to the Masai Mara

From Nakuru, the road continues towards the Masai Mara in a long day, or you can fly from Nairobi. See Nairobi to Masai Mara and how to get to the Masai Mara.

Practical

Practical Tips

Bring water, a light jacket and your documents, and confirm your pick-up time. The getting around East Africa guide explains transport options, and the Lake Nakuru National Park guide covers what to see.

Where

Where to Stay and How Long to Allow

Lodges and camps lie inside and around the park, and staying overnight lets you do both an afternoon and a morning drive without rushing. If you are using Nakuru as a stepping stone to the Masai Mara, a single night usually suffices. If rhinos and birds are priorities, two nights allow more time at the viewpoints and in the woodland. Check the Kenya lodges and camps guide for accommodation types, and read the best time to visit Lake Nakuru to pick your dates. For things to do once you arrive, see things to do in Lake Nakuru, and for onward Kenya routes use Kenya safari itineraries.

Travelling

Travelling With Children, Seniors or Limited Time

Because the drive is short and the roads are good, Nakuru suits families, older travellers and anyone with a tight schedule. Vehicles with pop-up roofs allow comfortable viewing, and the compact park means fewer long hours in the vehicle. If you are short of time, a single full day with an early start can still deliver rhinos, giraffes and the lakeshore. Read safari with teenagers and senior and accessible safaris for tips.
