Best Time to Visit Lake Nakuru: Dry Months, Birds and Flamingo Conditions

Lake Nakuru is rewarding in any month, with the drier periods of January to February and June to October suiting easy driving and the wetter months bringing lush scenery and migratory birds.

The park sits in the Rift Valley at a moderate altitude, so conditions are warm by day and fresher in the morning and evening. Because the park is compact, timing is more about comfort and birdlife than finding animals.

Flamingo numbers depend on the lake rather than on the calendar, so manage expectations accordingly.

This guide is part of our Uganda month-by-month and seasonal guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

June to OctoberDry and cooler, easy driving, busier
November and DecemberShort rains, migratory birds, fresh scenery
Dry

Dry Season Advantages

Tracks are firm, animals use predictable water sources and the park is easy to cover in a half or full day. Dust is modest compared with some parks. Rhinos, giraffes, buffalo and lions are visible throughout, and clear mornings give strong views from the viewpoints over the lake.

Green

Green Season Advantages

The rains bring fresh growth, young animals and migratory birds from Europe and Asia, which swell the birdlist between about November and April. The park is quieter and often beautiful under dramatic skies. Showers can make some tracks slippery, and cloud may limit viewpoint photographs, but flexible visitors are well rewarded.

Flamingos

Flamingos and Lake Levels

The lake has fluctuated in level and chemistry over the years, and flamingo numbers have changed with it. In some periods large flocks line the shore, and in others they gather elsewhere in the Rift Valley. Ask your operator for recent information before you travel, and treat flamingos as a bonus rather than a promise. See East Africa lakes and rivers.

Fitting

Fitting Nakuru Into a Kenya Trip

Nakuru is a natural stop between Nairobi and the Masai Mara, and it pairs with Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate. For wider planning, read best time to visit Kenya and consider a combined option such as the Masai Mara and Lake Elementaita safari.

Planning

Planning Advice

Book popular dates early, bring layers for cool mornings and see the Lake Nakuru wildlife guide to know what to look for. Official park tariffs apply in all seasons.

Weather

Weather, Altitude and Clothing

Nakuru sits at a moderate altitude, so days are warm but rarely oppressive, and evenings can feel cool. Early game drives call for a fleece or light jacket, while the middle of the day needs sun protection and a hat. During the rains, a waterproof jacket is wise, and sturdy shoes help at viewpoints. Cloud often gathers in the afternoon in the wetter months, so plan your main drive for the morning when possible. See the packing list for suggestions, and how to get to Lake Nakuru for transfer advice.
