Best Time to Visit Ol Pejeta and Laikipia: Seasons, Weather and Wildlife by Month

Ol Pejeta and Laikipia are good all year, but the dry months of January to February and June to October offer the clearest views of Mount Kenya and the easiest game viewing.

Laikipia lies on the equator but at roughly two thousand metres above sea level, so the climate is cooler than the latitude suggests. Days are warm and bright, while nights and early mornings can be properly chilly.

Wildlife does not migrate away in the wet season, which gives you flexibility. Your choice mostly affects scenery, comfort and the chance of seeing Mount Kenya clearly.

The Dry Seasons

Between June and October and again in January and February, the grass is shorter and animals gather around water points, so sightings are easier and drives are more predictable. Skies tend to be clear in the early morning, and Mount Kenya's jagged peaks may stand out above the plains at sunrise. Nights are cold, especially in July and August, so lodges often provide hot water bottles and fires. This is the most reliable window for first-time visitors.

The

The Green Seasons

When the rains arrive, the plateau turns green, wildflowers appear and baby animals are born. Birdlife improves as migrants and breeding species arrive. Showers are often heavy but short, and cloud may hide the mountain. Roads in black cotton soil areas can become sticky, so guides may change routes. Lodges are less busy, and the light for photography is often dramatic. For wider seasonal guidance, see best time to visit Kenya.

Seeing

Seeing Mount Kenya

The summit is most often visible at dawn and again at dusk, and cloud tends to build later in the day. If the mountain matters to you, plan early starts and keep your camera ready. Anyone interested in the mountain itself can read about Mount Kenya climbing and trekking.

Packing

Packing and Comfort

Layers are the key: a warm fleece or jacket for early drives, a light layer for the day, sun protection and sturdy shoes. A waterproof jacket is wise in the wetter months. See the packing list and health and vaccinations for further preparation.

Combining

Combining Seasons With Other Parks

Laikipia pairs well with the Masai Mara in July to October, and with the lowland heat of Samburu or the coast in the cooler months. See the Ol Pejeta wildlife guide and the Laikipia and Ol Pejeta guide to match species and dates.
