Best Time to Visit Lewa: Dry Seasons, Rains, Mount Kenya Views and Quiet Months
Lewa is rewarding year-round, though the dry months of June to October and January to February give the clearest skies and the easiest wildlife viewing.
Lewa sits on the equator but at altitude, and its climate is mild, with warm days and cool nights. Because rhinos, Grevy's zebras and predators live in the conservancy permanently, you do not have to time your trip around a migration.
Choose according to comfort, scenery and the kind of experience you want, from the crisp clarity of the dry season to the green freshness of the rains.
This guide is part of our Uganda month-by-month and seasonal guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Dry-Season Viewing
In the dry months, vegetation thins, animals concentrate near water, and game drives are easier to plan. Grevy's zebras and oryx tend to appear at water points, while elephants move predictably between rivers and dams. Dust is a factor on tracks, so cameras should be protected. Mornings are cold enough for a fleece, and cloud-free sunrises can reveal Mount Kenya's crags.
Green-Season Appeal
Rain transforms Lewa into a green and flower-covered landscape, with newborn antelope and a wide variety of birds. Storms are often dramatic, especially in the afternoons, and the light for photography can be exceptional. Some tracks become slick, and tall grass can make smaller animals harder to see. Lodges are generally quieter. For nationwide patterns, see best time to visit Kenya.
Special Events and Busy Periods
Late June and the July to October window are popular, and Christmas and New Year are also busy, so early booking is sensible. Lewa is also associated with an annual marathon, in which runners raise money for conservation and community work, and accommodation around the event can fill quickly, so check dates before you plan. Weekday arrivals are quieter, and a longer stay is rewarded with a better rhythm of drives and rest. If you prefer quiet, April, May and November are the calmest.
What to Pack
Pack layers, a warm jacket for early drives, a hat, sunglasses and sturdy walking shoes. Binoculars and a long lens suit the open terrain. See the packing list and Lewa wildlife guide.
Combining Dates With Other Parks
Lewa fits neatly before or after the Masai Mara, Samburu or Ol Pejeta. See getting to Lewa, best time for Ol Pejeta and Laikipia and East Africa best time to visit.
