Best Time to Visit East Africa: Seasons in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda

The dry months of June to October and December to February are best for most East Africa safaris, but the green seasons offer lower crowds and lush scenery.

East Africa has two rainy seasons, the long rains from March to May and the short rains in November. Roads and trails are easier in the dry months, and wildlife gathers near water.

This page summarises the best months by activity and country.

Uganda

Uganda and Rwanda

Primate trekking works year-round, but trails are drier from June to September and December to February. See best time to visit Uganda and gorilla trekking in the dry season.

Kenya

Kenya and Tanzania

The Great Migration reaches the Masai Mara around July to October. See best time for Kenya and best time for Tanzania.

Green

Green Season Benefits

Rain brings lush scenery, newborn animals in some areas and cheaper lodge rates. Pack waterproofs and expect some slow roads.

Month

Month by Month

January and February are hot and dry in many parks, which is excellent for wildlife. March to May bring heavy rain and fewer travellers. June to September are cooler and dry. October and November see early rains and flowers. December brings festive crowds and good weather in most parks.

Choosing

Choosing Between Peak and Green Season

Peak months offer easier roads and concentrated wildlife but higher demand. Green months bring birds, newborn animals and quieter lodges, with the trade-off of rain and mud. Gorilla trekking is possible year-round. See national parks guide.

Festivals

Festivals and Events

Cultural festivals, marathons and sporting events can affect availability. Book early for peak holiday periods such as Christmas and New Year, and for the migration season.

Weather

Weather and Altitude

Temperatures vary by altitude. Highlands such as Kigali, Bwindi and Arusha can be cool, while lowland savannah and the coast are hot. Mornings in parks can be chilly, so dress in layers. Pack for both sun and rain, whichever month you travel.

Crowds

Crowds and Pricing

Peak months bring higher demand and fuller lodges. Shoulder months often mix good weather with fewer people. Green seasons may offer lower rates and special offers.

Matching

Matching Season to Interest

If you want migration river crossings, plan for July to October. For birding, choose November to April. For gorillas, choose the drier months, but expect rain at any time. For beaches, choose the calmer, drier months. For fewer people, consider shoulder seasons.
