Best Time to Visit Mkomazi National Park: Dry Season Viewing and Green Season Birds

The dry months of June to October and January to February are best for wildlife in Mkomazi, as animals gather at limited water, while the rains of March to May and November bring green scenery and birds but slower tracks.

Mkomazi is a semi-arid park in the rain shadow of the Pare and Usambara mountains, so rainfall is low and uneven. The vegetation is thornbush and open grass, and the difference between wet and dry seasons is dramatic.

The right season depends on whether you want maximum wildlife, comfortable temperatures or a quiet birding trip.

Dry Season Viewing

From June to October the bush thins and the ground dries, so animals visit the few remaining water sources and are easier to find. Elephants, giraffes, zebras and antelope come into the open, and the sanctuary areas for rhinos and wild dogs are easier to reach. Nights can be cool in July and August, with warm days. Dust is a factor, so protect cameras and carry a scarf for the vehicle.

The

The Hottest Weeks

September, October and the end of January to early March are the hottest times, with temperatures climbing in the afternoon. Plan activities early and late and rest at midday. The heat shouldn't deter you, but it does shape the pace of the day. Take plenty of water and sun protection, and avoid long hikes in the middle of the day.

Green

Green Season and Birds

After the rains, the thornbush turns green, flowers bloom and migrant birds arrive. Birding is excellent, the landscape is more photogenic and the park is almost deserted. Animals disperse across the plains, so mammal sightings take more work. Some tracks may be slow or impassable after heavy rain, so keep your schedule flexible. See the East Africa birding guide for seasonal patterns.

Combining

Combining With Kilimanjaro and the Pare Mountains

Mkomazi lies on the road between Dar es Salaam and the Kilimanjaro region, so it is easy to combine with a Moshi stay, a Pare Mountains walk or a climb.
