Best Time to Visit Nyungwe Forest: Dry Months, Rain and Chimpanzee Tracking Conditions

June to August and December to February are the driest and most comfortable times for chimpanzee tracking and forest walks in Nyungwe, although rain can fall at any time of year.

Nyungwe is a high, wet rainforest, with rain a possibility in every month and mist common in the mornings. The difference between seasons shows mainly in how slippery the trails are and how clear the views from the ridges and canopy walk turn out to be.

Use this guide to compare seasons and prepare for the forest's changeable weather.

Dry

Dry Months

From June to August the trails firm up, mist lifts earlier and walking is less exhausting. This is the best time for the canopy walk views and for long hikes. Chimpanzee tracking is easier in dry weather because the slopes are less slippery, although the animals can still be hard to find. Book lodges and permits early. See chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe versus Kibale for what a trek involves.

December

December to February

A drier spell between the rains offers decent walking conditions and bright mornings. Fruiting trees influence where chimpanzees feed, so your guide's local knowledge matters more than the calendar. It is a good time to combine Nyungwe with Lake Kivu or Volcanoes National Park.

Wet

Wet Months

March to May is the wettest period, and deep mud makes forest walks harder. Many visitors still enjoy the lush scenery, birdsong and quiet trails, and waterproof gear makes a major difference. Birds are active in the rains and orchids bloom. Choose this time if you value solitude over comfort.

September

September to November

The short rains bring regular showers, but also fresh growth, fruiting trees and active birds. Mornings are often clear before cloud builds later in the day, so early activities tend to be the most comfortable. Chimpanzee tracking continues as normal, and the forest has an atmospheric, misty quality that many photographers enjoy. Lodges are less busy than in the dry months, which can make for a relaxed stay, though trails still need waterproof boots and patience on the slippery climbs.

Preparing

Preparing for Forest Weather

The forest sits at high altitude, so mornings are cold and damp whatever the month. Pack a waterproof jacket, quick-drying layers, gaiters and gloves, and keep cameras in dry bags. See the packing list and best time to visit Rwanda for wider planning.
