Best Time to Visit Nairobi National Park: Dry Season, Rains and Time of Day
Nairobi National Park can be visited all year, with the dry months of January to February and June to October best for game viewing and early morning or late afternoon the best times of day.
Nairobi lies at roughly 1,700 metres, so the climate is mild. The park’s grass and water change with the rains, but wildlife is resident throughout the year.
Because it is so close to the airport and city hotels, this is the one park where you can choose the time of day as carefully as the month.
This guide is part of our Uganda month-by-month and seasonal guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Dry Season Advantages
When rain is scarce, animals gather near dams and rivers within the park, and the open grassland draws herds from the surrounding plains. Grass is shorter, making animals easier to spot, and roads are firm. These months are the best choice if you only have time for a single visit. Green Season Advantages
From March to May and again in November, the park turns green, birds are active, and the many young animals appear. There are fewer vehicles and the air is fresh after rain. Heavy showers can make some tracks slippery and cloud can hide the skyline, but game viewing is still good. Photographers often favour the dramatic skies. See safari photography tips.
Best Time of Day
Dawn and late afternoon are best, when predators are active and the light is soft. Midday is better for a break and lunch. Traffic around the city matters too: leaving early avoids the worst congestion on routes to the gates, which is especially important if you have a flight to catch afterwards. Our getting to Nairobi National Park page explains the main routes.
Fitting It Into Your Trip
The park is ideal for a half-day outing on arrival or departure day, or as a rest-day activity between longer safaris. Combine it with a visit to the elephant orphanage and other city sights covered in things to do in Nairobi.
Weather, Skyline Views and Photography
Nairobi’s highland climate means mornings can be cool and cloudy even in the dry season, with sunshine building later in the day. Clear mornings often give the clearest views of the city skyline behind grazing zebras or giraffes, which is the picture that many visitors come to take. After rain the air is washed clean, and dramatic clouds can make even a simple scene more striking. Bring a light jacket for the early drive, a hat for midday and binoculars throughout the year. Visitors who plan to photograph rhinos should allow plenty of time in thicket areas and stay patient.
