Nairobi National Park Wildlife Guide: Black Rhinos, Lions, Giraffes and 400 Bird Species
Nairobi National Park holds black rhinos, lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, hippos and hundreds of bird species within sight of the city’s skyscrapers.
Kenya’s first national park lies on the southern edge of the capital, so it is possible to watch a lion on open grassland with high-rise buildings on the horizon. The park is fenced on its northern side, but open to the south, which lets animals move out into the surrounding plains.
Elephants are not a feature here, but almost everything else on a classic safari list is. This guide explains who lives where and how to see them.
This guide is part of our animals of Uganda and East Africa guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Black Rhinos
The park is known for its black rhinos, which have been protected and moved between reserves as part of national conservation planning. Rhinos are shy and often browse in dense thicket, so sightings take patience and a sharp-eyed guide, but the odds in Nairobi are better than in many bigger parks. Our black rhino conservation page explains the threats they face and why every sighting supports their protection.
Lions, Leopards and Cheetahs
Lions are the park’s top predators, often seen resting on open plains or near the roads, and spotted hyenas and jackals share the grassland. Leopards live in rocky valleys and wooded areas and are harder to find. Cheetahs occasionally appear on the plains. Read African big cats for help distinguishing the species and understanding their behaviour.
Giraffes, Zebras and Other Herbivores
Maasai giraffes browse the acacias, while zebras, wildebeest, Coke’s hartebeest, eland, impala and Thomson’s gazelles graze the grassland. Buffalo gather near water, and warthogs and ostriches are common. In the dry season, large herds move into the park from the surrounding plains. For another giraffe encounter nearby, see are giraffes friendly.
Hippos, Crocodiles and Birds
Hippos and crocodiles live in the pools and dams, and walking trails at some picnic sites offer views of the water. More than four hundred bird species have been recorded, including raptors, storks, rollers, bee-eaters and weavers. Our East Africa birding guide helps you plan a bird-focused visit.
Viewing Tips
Go at opening time for the best light and active animals, keep to the tracks, and ask your guide to check the dams and thickets for rhinos. Use binoculars and be patient.
