Mikumi Wildlife Guide: Lions, Elephants, Giraffes and Hippos on the Mkata Floodplain

Mikumi National Park shelters lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, hippos and many birds, most visible on the open Mkata floodplain.

Mikumi sits between mountain ranges in south-central Tanzania, and the broad floodplain at its heart gives it a feel often compared with the northern savannahs. Game is easy to see on open ground, which makes it a rewarding short safari.

This guide explains what lives where and how to look for it.

This guide is part of our animals of Uganda and East Africa guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Lions and Other Predators

Lions are the main attraction of Mikumi, and they are often found resting in the shade or watching herds from the grass. Spotted hyenas and jackals scavenge across the plains, while leopards are present but secretive in woodland. Patient driving at first and last light improves your chances. For background on the cats of the region, see African big cats and what lions eat.

Elephants

Elephants, Giraffes and Buffalo

Elephants wander through the woodland and across the floodplain, and in some seasons family herds are easy to watch from a distance. Giraffes browse the acacias, and buffalo gather in large groups near water. Elephants are covered in more detail in elephant facts and where to see them.

Plains

Plains Game and Primates

Zebras, wildebeest, impalas, elands and warthogs graze in the open, and yellow baboons and vervet monkeys are common near the roads. The mix gives lively scenes, and the plains game make the park popular with photographers who like uncluttered backgrounds; see safari photography tips.

Hippos

Hippos and Birdlife

A well-known hippo pool lets you watch these animals at rest from a safe viewpoint, and waterbirds visit the margins. The park's bird list is long, including raptors, bee-eaters, rollers and hornbills. Bring binoculars, and consult the East Africa birding guide for what to look for.

Why

Why Mikumi Suits Short Safaris

The park combines easy access with open terrain, so even a single night can produce lions, elephants and giraffes. Distances between habitats are small, and guides know where animals favour at different times of day. Many travellers use Mikumi as an introduction to Tanzanian wildlife before travelling on to Nyerere or Ruaha, and it fits well beside the Ruaha and Nyerere safari guide.

Reading

Reading Animal Behaviour

Take time at each sighting rather than moving on quickly. Watch how zebra herds position sentries, how giraffes pause to look towards hidden predators and how baboons give alarm calls. These clues often lead to the more elusive animals, and a patient driver-guide will explain what they mean. Listening for calls at dusk can also reveal the presence of hyenas, jackals and nightjars.

Planning Your Wildlife Viewing

Dry months concentrate animals near water and make roads easier. For planning, see best time to visit Mikumi, things to do in Mikumi and East Africa wildlife guide.
