Best Time to Visit Nyerere National Park: Dry Season, Green Season and Boat Safari Months

The dry months from late June to October are the most reliable time for game viewing in Nyerere National Park, while the green season from November to April suits birders and travellers who prefer quiet camps.

Nyerere, the southern Tanzanian park carved from the northern part of the old Selous Game Reserve, is defined by the Rufiji River and its lakes. Rainfall changes how far animals roam, how thick the bush becomes and which activities are comfortable.

This guide explains how each season feels on the ground so you can match your dates to the safari you want, whether that is walking, boating or classic game drives.

This guide is part of our Uganda month-by-month and seasonal guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

The

The Dry Season Advantage

From about late June, the bush dries out and the grass thins, which makes animals far easier to find. Elephants, buffalo, giraffes and impalas come down to the Rufiji and its lakes, and hippos and crocodiles are packed into shrinking channels. Walking safaris are at their most comfortable because the days are cooler at first and the vegetation is lower. If this is your first southern Tanzania safari, the dry season is the safest choice, and it pairs well with a visit to Ruaha and Nyerere.

The

The Green Season

Between November and April the park turns vivid green. Migrant birds arrive, many animals have young and light showers cool the afternoons. Game is more dispersed because water is available everywhere, so sightings take more effort, but boat safaris on the Rufiji remain rewarding and crowds are almost absent. Humidity is higher and insects more noticeable, so read the health and vaccinations guide before you go. Birders will find the period especially rewarding; see the East Africa birding guide.

The

The Long Rains

March to May is the wettest stretch. Tracks can flood, some lodges and tented camps close for the season, and flights may be affected by weather. Those who do visit enjoy empty landscapes, but this is not the time for a first-time visitor with a fixed itinerary. If you only have these months to travel, the northern parks may be a safer choice; compare them in northern versus southern circuit.

Temperatures

Temperatures and What to Pack

Nyerere sits at low altitude, so days are warm to hot in nearly every month, and early mornings in July and August can feel pleasantly cool on an open vehicle or boat. Bring light long sleeves, a hat, sunglasses and insect protection. Neutral colours are better than bright ones. The East Africa packing list covers luggage limits for light aircraft, which apply to most southern flights.

Choosing

Choosing Your Dates

If wildlife concentration matters most, travel from July to October. If you want fewer vehicles and lower demand, consider June or the early green months of November and December.
