Best Time to Visit Mahale Mountains: Dry Season Chimpanzee Trekking and Lake Weather

The dry months from about May to October are generally the best time for chimpanzee trekking in Mahale, with easier trails, clearer weather and camps open on Lake Tanganyika.

Mahale's forest and shoreline are lush, and rain can fall in most months, but the dry season offers more comfortable trekking and calmer boat transfers. Chimpanzees can be found in all seasons.

This guide explains what each part of the year is like so you can plan with confidence.

This guide is part of our Uganda month-by-month and seasonal guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Dry

Dry Season Trekking

Trails are drier, the forest is easier to move through and boats cross the lake more comfortably. Chimpanzees often descend towards the lower forest, which can make finding them easier. Visibility for photographs is better, though forest light is always challenging. See safari photography tips.

Wet

Wet Season Conditions

Heavy rain makes slopes slippery and can bring storms across the lake, which affects boat transfers. Some camps close, and trekking is physically harder. The chimps remain, but you must be prepared for wet, muddy walking and flexible timing.

Chimp

Chimp Behaviour and Seasons

Chimpanzees move according to fruiting trees, so their location shifts through the year. A guide reads these patterns and plans each trek. Because behaviour is unpredictable, allow at least two days of trekking. For more on chimp life, see chimpanzee lifespan, diet and habitat.

Combining

Combining With Katavi

The dry season also suits Katavi, so the two parks make a natural pair; see best time to visit Katavi and best time to visit Tanzania. For logistics, read how to get to Mahale.

Lake

Lake Conditions and Comfort

The lake is generally calmer in the dry season, which makes boat transfers and kayaking more pleasant. Winds can rise in the afternoon, so many activities take place in the morning. Water temperature is comfortable for swimming year-round. In the wet season, lightning storms over the water are impressive but can disrupt plans, so keep a flexible attitude.

Trekking

Trekking Fitness and Preparation

Whatever the month, the forest is steep, and the air is humid. Start preparing a few weeks ahead with walks on hills, and bring a walking stick if you like extra support. Drink plenty of water, wear moisture-wicking layers and keep a light waterproof in your daypack. Guides set the pace, and you can ask for rests whenever you need them.

Packing

Packing for the Forest

Bring sturdy shoes, long trousers, a rain jacket and a small daypack; see the packing list.
