Best Time to Visit Gombe Stream National Park: Seasons, Weather and Chimp Trekking

Gombe can be visited all year, but the drier months from about May to October make the forest trails easier and the boat journey from Kigoma more comfortable, while the green months bring lush scenery and fewer visitors.

Gombe Stream National Park is a narrow strip of steep forest running down to the shore of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania. Because the chimpanzees live there permanently, the question is less about whether you will find them and more about how comfortable the trails and the lake crossing will be.

This guide explains how the seasons shape a visit, so you can choose dates that suit your fitness, your photography and your wider Tanzania plans.

This guide is part of our Uganda month-by-month and seasonal guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Chimpanzee Trekking Through the Year

The chimpanzees of Gombe are habituated and live in the park throughout the year, so trekking is offered in every month. What changes is where they feed. Fruiting trees draw the community to different slopes at different times, and your guides will search by following calls, nests and fresh signs. Some days the chimpanzees are close to the lakeshore, other days they are high on the ridges, which is why a flexible attitude and sturdy boots matter more than the exact month. The

The Dry Season Advantage

From roughly May to October the forest floor is firmer, streams are lower and the humidity is a little easier to bear. Mornings on the lake are often calm, which makes the boat ride from Kigoma more pleasant, and photographers benefit from brighter light through the canopy. This is also the period when many travellers plan trips to the Mahale Mountains further south, so Gombe fits naturally into a combined primate itinerary. See Gombe and Mahale chimpanzee trekking.

The

The Green Season Appeal

Between November and April the forest is thick and bright, waterfalls run strongly and the park is noticeably quiet. Expect warm, humid days with downpours, and treat the steeper tracks with care because mud makes descents slow. Waterproof layers, a dry bag for cameras and boots with a good grip transform the experience. Boat transfers may be delayed in rough weather, so avoid tight connections on the day you leave.

Planning

Planning Around Other Destinations

Gombe is far from the main safari parks, so most visitors treat it as an extension after the northern circuit or alongside Mahale. If you are choosing dates for the whole country, compare this page with best time to visit Tanzania and the regional overview in best time to visit East Africa. Allow at least two nights so that a weather delay does not cost you your trek.

What

What to Pack and How to Prepare

Light, quick-drying clothing, long trousers, a rain jacket, a hat and sturdy walking shoes are the essentials. Insect repellent and a refillable bottle are useful in every season. Speak to a travel clinic about malaria prevention well before departure, using East Africa health and vaccinations as a starting point, and review the East Africa packing list for the full kit.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Many travellers prefer the drier period between about May and October, but chimpanzee trekking operates all year and each season has its own appeal.

Yes. The chimpanzees live in the park permanently, though trails are slipperier and you should expect to get wet.

The wetter months, especially March to April, usually have the fewest visitors and the most atmospheric forest.

Two nights is a sensible minimum, giving you a second chance at a trek if the weather or the chimpanzees do not cooperate on day one.

It is warm and humid near the lake, with cooler air higher on the ridges. Light layers work best for the steep hikes.
