Best Time to Visit Arusha National Park: Mountain Views, Weather and Seasons

The dry months of June to October and January to February give the clearest views of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro, while the green seasons bring lush scenery, active birds and fewer vehicles.

Arusha National Park sits on the lower slopes of Mount Meru at a cooler altitude than most northern circuit parks, so mornings can feel fresh and the weather can change quickly.

Timing matters mainly for views and comfort, because wildlife is present throughout the year and the park is short enough to adapt to the weather.

This guide is part of our Uganda month-by-month and seasonal guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Dry

Dry Season Views

Early mornings from June to October and in January and February are the most reliable for seeing the summit of Mount Meru and, from certain viewpoints, the distant bulk of Kilimanjaro. Clouds tend to build later in the day, so start drives early and plan viewpoint stops first. Dry tracks are easy to drive, and animals gather at the lakes. The climb described in Mount Meru and Arusha National Park guide is also easier on firm, dry ground.

Green

Green Season Charm

From March to May and again in November the park is richly green, with flowering plants, active birdlife and fewer visitors. Showers can reduce visibility and make some tracks slippery, but the clouds also create dramatic light over the crater. Waterproof layers and patience reward you with some of the most atmospheric scenes of the year.

Birds

Birds and Flamingos

Bird activity is high in the wetter months when resident species breed and migrants arrive, while the Momella Lakes can be excellent for waterbirds whenever conditions suit them. Water levels and the number of flamingos vary from year to year, so do not plan an entire trip around them. For general advice see East Africa birding guide.

Fitting

Fitting the Park Into a Longer Trip

Many travellers visit on the first or last day of a northern circuit safari, which means your dates are usually set by the Serengeti or the climb. Use best time to visit Tanzania for the larger picture, and northern circuit safari to see how Arusha National Park fits in. Check East Africa packing list for layers and rain gear.
