Tanzania Northern Circuit Safari: Route, Parks, Days and Best Time

The Tanzania northern circuit links Arusha with Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, which together form the country's classic safari route.

The circuit is popular because the parks are close, the wildlife is varied and the roads are manageable. Most trips start and end in Arusha, and drives between parks run from two to several hours.

This page sets out the route, the days needed and what each park adds.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Sample Itinerary

Many northern circuit trips begin in Arusha, visit Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, then return to Arusha. Seven to ten days suits most travellers. Add Zanzibar for a beach finish.

Seasonal

Seasonal Highlights

Tarangire is excellent in the dry months for elephants. The Serengeti hosts the migration at different locations through the year. Ngorongoro offers wildlife year-round.

Choosing

Choosing Lodges and Camps

Mix lodges and mobile camps to follow wildlife. Ask about locations and how long you will spend driving.

Practical

Practical Tips

Distances are long and roads may be rough, so allow time. Pack layers, because the Ngorongoro rim is cool. Book popular lodges early for peak months. Consider flying between parks if time is limited. See private concessions and walking safaris.

Choosing

Choosing Between Short and Long Versions

A five-day trip may cover Tarangire, Ngorongoro and a short Serengeti stay, using flights or long drives. A seven- to ten-day trip adds time in different Serengeti sectors, Lake Manyara and cultural stops. Longer trips reduce rush and increase the chance of special sightings. Consider your budget, energy and season, and ask operators how many hours you will spend driving each day.

Ngorongoro

Ngorongoro Crater Tips

Start early to beat crowds, bring layers because the rim is cold, and pack a picnic. The crater floor holds elephants, lions, buffalo and rhinos in a compact area. Time on the floor is limited, so use it wisely. A knowledgeable guide knows where animals gather at different hours.

Planning

Planning Tips

Start in Arusha, pack for cool crater mornings and allow time for long drives. See Arusha gateway guide and Lake Natron.
