How to Get to Mahale Mountains National Park: Flights, Boats and the Lake Tanganyika Route

Mahale Mountains National Park has no road access, so travellers arrive by light aircraft to an airstrip and then continue by boat, or travel by boat from Kigoma.

The park lies on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika and is among the most remote in Tanzania. The journey is long but forms part of the experience, ending with a boat ride along a forested shoreline.

Plan well ahead because transfers depend on schedules and weather.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Flying In

Light aircraft serve an airstrip near the park, with flights from Arusha, Kigoma and Katavi, and onward boat transfers to camp. Flights are shared and follow schedules, and the lake can be calm in the morning and breezy later, so timing matters. Camp staff meet you and handle your bags. See flying safaris in East Africa.

By

By Boat From Kigoma

Travellers can reach Mahale by boat from Kigoma, a journey that takes much of a day. It is scenic and economical in time terms only for those with flexible schedules, and your camp can advise on options. Lake conditions vary, so build in buffer days.

Western

Western Circuit Combinations

Mahale is often combined with Katavi and sometimes with Gombe, creating a lake-and-wilderness itinerary. See how to get to Katavi, Gombe and Mahale trekking and Gombe wildlife guide.

Luggage

Luggage and Fitness

Aircraft and boats need soft bags with modest weight. Trekking involves steep, forested trails, so reasonable fitness helps. Consider the packing list and health guide.

What

What the Journey Feels Like

The approach is one of the most memorable parts of the trip. Aircraft skim over forest and lake before landing at a small airstrip, and the last leg by boat brings you to a beach beneath wooded mountains. Camp staff greet you on the sand, and you may see chimpanzees on the same shoreline before you reach your tent. Because there are no roads, the sense of isolation is complete.

Health

Health and Safety Preparations

Remote locations mean medical help is far away, so travel insurance with evacuation cover is essential. Consult the health and vaccinations guide about malaria prevention, and carry personal medication. Chimpanzees are susceptible to human illness, so you must not trek if you have a cold or other infection, and operators may check visitors before treks.

Allowing

Allowing Time

Build at least one buffer day into any itinerary that includes Mahale, particularly before international flights. Light aircraft and boats depend on weather and daylight, so schedules can shift. A relaxed plan also lets you enjoy the lake rather than rushing. See the Tanzania travel guide for general planning.
