How to Get to Arusha National Park: From Arusha Town, Kilimanjaro Airport and Moshi

Arusha National Park is one of the easiest parks in Tanzania to reach, lying a short drive from Arusha town and within about an hour or so of Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Most northern circuit safaris begin and end in Arusha, which means the park is perfectly placed for a first-day game drive after you land or a last-day outing before you fly home.

The roads are straightforward, and the main planning questions are which gate to use and how to fit the park around your other plans.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

By Road From Arusha

The park lies on the north-eastern edge of the city, reached by tarmac and then well-maintained park tracks. Most operators collect you from your hotel in a safari vehicle, and the drive passes farms and villages before the forest begins. Because the distances are short, you can leave after breakfast and still enjoy a long day inside. See Arusha safari gateway guide for hotels and arrival tips.

From

From Kilimanjaro International Airport

The airport lies between Arusha and Moshi, so it is a convenient entry point. A transfer to the park takes roughly an hour or so depending on traffic and the exact gate, and many travellers drop bags at their hotel first. If you land in the afternoon, a short evening visit is possible but it is usually kinder to rest and begin fresh the next morning.

Day

Day Trips and Overnight Stays

Because the park is compact, a single day covers the crater viewpoints, the Momella Lakes and a walk in the forest. Overnight options inside or near the park suit those who plan to climb Mount Meru or who want a slow, quiet start to the safari. Read Mount Meru and Arusha National Park guide for the mountain side of the experience.

Combining

Combining With Other Parks

Arusha National Park often opens an itinerary that continues to Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. It also works neatly before or after a Kilimanjaro climb, when you want a gentle day without long driving. See northern circuit safari and Kilimanjaro climbing guide.

Practical

Practical Tips

Carry your passport, water and sun protection, and confirm the gate with your operator. Information on entry rules is in East Africa visa guide, and overland connections are explained in getting around East Africa.

Timing

Timing Your Visit Within the Day

Gates open in the morning and close in the evening, so a prompt start makes the most of the daylight. Early arrivals enjoy cool air, active animals and the best chance of a clear mountain view, while a late-afternoon visit before an evening flight is possible if you keep the plan simple. Ask your operator to build in a picnic stop at a viewpoint so the day feels unhurried.
