How to Get to Gombe Stream National Park: Kigoma, Boats and Flights

Gombe has no road access: you travel to the lakeside town of Kigoma, usually by air, and then continue by boat along the shore of Lake Tanganyika.

Gombe Stream National Park lies in the far west of Tanzania, a long way from the northern safari circuit. That remoteness is part of its charm, but it means the journey needs more planning than a typical park visit.

The steps are simple once you see them: reach Kigoma, arrange the boat, and allow enough time on both ends of your trek.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Reaching Kigoma

Kigoma is the regional town on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika and the usual base for Gombe. Scheduled flights link it with Dar es Salaam, and many travellers connect from Arusha or elsewhere in the north through the same hub. Overland travel is possible but demanding, with very long distances, so most visitors fly. Nearby Ujiji is where the journalist Henry Morton Stanley met David Livingstone in 1871, which makes a short historical stop before or after your trip. See Tanzania travel guide.

The

The Boat Journey

From Kigoma you continue north by motorised boat along the lake, a journey that typically takes a few hours depending on the vessel and conditions. The route passes fishing villages, small beaches and forested hills, and it is a highlight in its own right. Your operator or lodge arranges the transfer, and you should confirm departure times the evening before. Lake winds can build later in the day, so morning departures are usually preferred.

Where

Where You Sleep

Accommodation near the park is limited, which keeps the area wonderfully quiet. Options include simple park rest-house style rooms and a small lodge on the shore, and some travellers base themselves in Kigoma and visit on a long day. Staying overnight in the park gives you an early start on the trails and more time by the water. Book early in the busy months, because capacity is small.

Combining

Combining Gombe With Other Places

Gombe pairs well with the Mahale Mountains, which also sit on Lake Tanganyika and are reached by light aircraft or boat. It also works as a finale after the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, linked by domestic flights. Read flying safaris in East Africa and getting around East Africa for how domestic connections and baggage limits work.

Practical

Practical Planning Tips

Carry soft luggage, a rain layer and drinking water. Check entry requirements in the East Africa visa guide and confirm vaccinations through health and vaccinations. Leave a buffer day before an international flight home, since weather or boat delays can happen, and see Gombe and Mahale chimpanzee trekking for wider route ideas.
