Things to Do in Nyerere National Park: Boat Safaris, Walking, Fly-Camping and Game Drives

Nyerere is one of the few large Tanzanian parks where you can combine boat safaris, guided walks, fly-camping and game drives in a single stay.

The park is built around the Rufiji River and its lakes and channels, and that water shapes the activities. Variety is the main appeal, since each day can feel different from the last.

Most camps offer a mix, and a stay of three or four nights lets you try them all.

This guide is part of our Uganda park trails and activities guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Boat Safaris on the Rufiji

Gliding along the river is the signature activity. From a low boat you drift past hippo pods, crocodiles basking on sandbanks, elephants drinking and kingfishers, herons and fish eagles on the banks. The slow pace is ideal for photography, and the lower viewpoint gives close but safe encounters. See why hippos can be dangerous to understand the distance guides keep.

Guided

Guided Walking Safaris

Accompanied by a guide and an armed ranger, walks reveal tracks, dung, insects, plants and the smaller details that vehicles miss. They are not about chasing big animals but about learning to read the bush. Walks usually start early while it is cool. Read walking safaris in Tanzania and night drives and walking safaris for what to expect and the briefing rules.

Fly-Camping

Fly-Camping

Some operators arrange a night in a simple mobile camp away from the main lodge, with tents set up in the wild and dinner by the fire. It is an adventurous way to hear the bush after dark and wake with the dawn chorus. Bookings must be planned ahead, and conditions depend on season and camp policy.

Game

Game Drives

Open vehicles explore the lakes, woodlands and grassland. Elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebras and a range of antelope are regularly seen, along with lions and the possibility of African wild dogs, for which the southern parks are known; see African wild dog facts. For how drives are organised, read game drives explained.

Choosing

Choosing Between Activities

A sensible stay mixes water, walking and vehicles. Boat safaris are best in the heat of the day, when animals come to drink, while walks and drives belong to the cool hours around dawn and dusk. Ask your camp how its schedule works, because some properties sit on lakes and favour boats, while others are inland and favour drives. Whichever you choose, the guides interpret the details, such as bird calls, tracks and plant uses, which turns a simple outing into a learning experience.

What

What to Bring on Activities

Carry a hat, sunscreen, a light long-sleeved shirt and insect repellent, and wear neutral colours. A small daypack with water, binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens is enough for most outings. Closed shoes are required on walks. Photographers should bring a dry bag for boat trips, because spray and dust are common. For more advice, see safari photography tips and the East Africa packing list.

Birding

Birding, Fishing and Relaxing

More than four hundred bird species are recorded in the wider ecosystem, and waterside camps make bird watching easy from the deck. Some camps also arrange fishing. Midday is a good time to rest, swim or review photos. For timing your trip, see best time to visit Nyerere and how to get there.
