Best Time to Visit Shimba Hills: Dry Months, Green Season and Coastal Weather
The best months for Shimba Hills are the drier periods of January to March and June to October, though the green season brings waterfalls, birds and lush forest.
Shimba Hills is warm and humid like the coast, but the hills are a little cooler and often misty in the early morning. Rainfall follows the coastal pattern of long and short rains.
Because it is usually visited as a day trip or a short stay from the beach, you can match the date to your coastal holiday.
This guide is part of our Uganda month-by-month and seasonal guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Dry Months
When it is drier, the tracks are firm and the grass is short, so animals such as sable antelope and buffalo are easier to see on the open ridges. Walks to the waterfall are comfortable underfoot. These are the safest months for a short visit when you cannot risk weather delays. Compare with national patterns on the best time to visit Kenya page.
Rainy Months
During the long rains, showers can be heavy and the hills may be wrapped in cloud, but the forest looks beautiful and streams and waterfalls flow strongly. Some tracks become slippery, and walking trails can be muddy. If your beach holiday falls in this season, a morning in the hills between showers can still be rewarding. For more on seasons across the coast, see the Mombasa and the Kenyan coast guide.
Temperature and Humidity
Expect warm, humid conditions in the lowlands, with cooler air on the ridges. Dress in light layers, wear sturdy shoes for the forest walk and carry insect repellent and sunscreen. See the packing list and the health and vaccinations guide.
Planning Around the Coast
The reserve combines naturally with time at Diani Beach and with safaris in Tsavo or the Masai Mara. See getting to Shimba Hills for routes and East Africa best time to visit for a regional overview.
Tips for Wildlife and Walks in Any Season
Whatever the month, early mornings are best for wildlife, and a ranger-led walk adds interest to a short visit. Wear long, light trousers for forest trails, bring a hat and sunscreen for the open ridges, and keep a light waterproof in your bag. If heavy rain falls overnight, ask your operator whether tracks are passable before setting out. Many travellers find that a half-day in the hills offers welcome relief from beach heat, with cooler air, green views and a very different pace from the coast.
