How to Get to Shimba Hills: From Diani, Mombasa and the Likoni Ferry

Shimba Hills lies inland from Kenya’s south coast, an easy road trip from Diani or Mombasa, usually done as a guided day excursion in a safari vehicle.

The reserve sits in the hills behind the coastal strip, reached by road through villages and farmland. From Diani the route is relatively direct, while from Mombasa it normally involves crossing the Likoni channel.

Most visitors go with a driver-guide, which makes timing and park entry simple.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

From Diani

Most Diani hotels offer or can arrange excursions to the reserve. The road leads inland through the Kwale area, climbing gradually to the park gate. Starting early gives you time for a game drive, a walk to the waterfall and a picnic lunch before returning to the beach by late afternoon. See the Diani Beach guide for more on the area.

From

From Mombasa

From the island of Mombasa, you cross to the south coast by the Likoni ferry and continue by road. Ferry queues can be long at peak times, so leave early and allow extra time on the way back. The Mombasa and the Kenyan coast guide explains the layout of the city and surrounding coast.

Joining

Joining a Guided Excursion

Operators run day trips with pickup from hotels, a game drive with a driver-guide, a ranger-led walk to the waterfall, and a lunch stop. This is the easiest option, and your guide handles park entry arrangements. Read Kenya entry, money and practical information for how payments and permits generally work.

Self-Drive

Self-Drive and Overnight Stays

Self-drivers can reach the gate by road, but a guide improves your chances of finding wildlife. There are lodges and cottages at or near the reserve for travellers who want an overnight stay and early-morning game viewing. See the self-drive safari guide and the Kenya lodges and camps guide.

Linking

Linking With Other Destinations

Many travellers combine a safari in Tsavo or the Masai Mara with a few beach days and a half-day in Shimba Hills. See Tsavo East and Tsavo West, and getting around East Africa for transport options.

Timing

Timing and What to Bring

Aim to leave your hotel soon after sunrise so that you reach the gate while animals are still active and the air is cool. A full day usually includes a game drive, a walk to the waterfall, a picnic and the return journey, so keep the schedule relaxed. Carry water, sun protection, insect repellent, comfortable walking shoes, binoculars and a camera. Your passport or copy may be needed for entry formalities, and small bags are easier than large ones in a shared vehicle. After your trip, you will return to the coast with a different view of Kenya’s wildlife.
