Best Time to Visit Meru National Park: Dry Months, Green Season and Wildlife Viewing

The dry months of January to March and June to October are best for game viewing in Meru, while the rains from April to May and November turn the park green and bring birds and fewer visitors.

Meru is warm and fairly dry, though the western side near the mountains receives more rain than the eastern plains. Seasonal rain controls the grass, the water and the roads.

Because few travellers visit at any time, even peak months feel quiet, and you can choose dates for comfort or scenery rather than avoiding crowds.

This guide is part of our Uganda month-by-month and seasonal guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

The

The Dry Seasons

During the dry months, animals concentrate along rivers and swamps and the shortened grass makes them easier to spot. Elephants, buffalo, giraffes and plains game gather in numbers, and predators follow. Tracks are firm and dust is modest compared with some parks. This is the most reliable period for a first visit, and it fits neatly with the best months for Mount Kenya if you plan to combine them.

The

The Green Seasons

Rain brings bright vegetation, new-born antelope and many migrant and resident birds, and the swamps and rivers flow strongly. The trade-off is that some tracks are slippery, animals disperse as water becomes widely available, and grass can hide predators. Lodges tend to be quieter and offer good-value stays. If you enjoy birding or photography with lush backdrops, the green season is rewarding. See the East Africa birding guide.

Temperature

Temperature and What to Wear

Days are warm to hot and early mornings can be pleasantly cool, especially from June to August. Pack light, breathable clothing in neutral colours, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, plus a warm layer for dawn drives. Our packing list covers the full kit, and the health and vaccinations guide explains malaria precautions.

Choosing

Choosing Dates Around Your Wider Trip

Meru works best as part of a northern Kenya loop with Mount Kenya, Laikipia and Samburu, and the best months for those places overlap with Meru’s dry seasons. See the best time to visit Kenya page for a country-wide view and the East Africa best time to visit guide for regional comparisons.

How

How Many Nights to Allow

Because Meru is far from the main safari routes, it deserves at least two or three nights, so that you can enjoy both morning and afternoon drives, visit the rhino sanctuary and still have time to sit by the river. Travellers who add Meru to a longer circuit often find it the highlight for its peace and for the freedom to linger at sightings. Whatever the season, begin days early, pack for cool mornings and hot middays, and keep some flexibility in your plans in case rain affects the tracks.
