Best Time to Visit the Aberdares: Dry Months, Rain, Mist and Night Viewing

The best time to visit the Aberdares is during the drier months of January to February and June to September, when tracks are firmer, mist is lighter and animals are easier to see.

Aberdare National Park is high, wet and often cloudy, so its weather is among the most changeable in Kenya. Forest and moorland are cool throughout the year, and heavy rain can arrive at any time of year, even in the drier months.

Because many visitors watch animals from lodge viewing decks, comfort and weather matter more than they might elsewhere. This guide helps you choose your dates.

The

The Drier Months

In the drier months, the road up into the forest is easier, moorland views are more reliable and the lodge waterholes draw regular animals, especially in the evening. Skies can still be misty, and you should be prepared for cold nights, particularly in June to August. Many visitors choose these months for walks to the waterfalls and for fishing the streams. The overall experience is more predictable, with fewer lost days to bad weather.

The

The Rainy Months

Between March and May, heavy rain and thick mist can hide views and make tracks slippery. Access to the higher moorland may be restricted, and some activities are not possible. On the other hand, the forest is lush, rivers run strongly and waterfalls are at their most dramatic. Be flexible, carry waterproofs and accept that wildlife viewing may be quieter. The short rains in October and November can also be wet. See best time to visit Kenya.

Night

Night Viewing Through the Year

Lodge-based game viewing works in all seasons, because animals come to salt licks and waterholes for minerals as well as water. Clear, dry nights are more comfortable for staying up, while very wet nights can reduce activity. Staff usually alert guests when something interesting arrives, which means you can rest and still catch sightings. At some lodges, guests can request a wake-up call for particular species, and a logbook records which animals have appeared that night, so you can compare notes at breakfast. Bring a blanket or warm layer for the deck, and keep conversation low, since loud noise can send animals away from the waterhole before you have had a proper look.

What

What to Pack for Altitude

Bring a warm jacket, a hat and gloves for the highest areas, waterproof clothing, sturdy shoes and layers that dry quickly. Evenings at lodges can be cold, though rooms are usually heated. Read the packing list and health and vaccinations.

Combining

Combining Seasons With Other Parks

The Aberdares are often combined with Lake Nakuru, Naivasha or Laikipia, which have different weather patterns. See the wildlife guide, Naivasha best time and Ol Pejeta best time.
