Best Time to Visit Samburu: Dry Months, Green Season and River Wildlife
Samburu is good year-round, but the dry months of June to October and January to March concentrate animals on the Ewaso Ng'iro River, while the green seasons bring birds and quiet.
Samburu lies in hot, semi-arid country north of Mount Kenya. The river is the lifeline, and its banks are productive in every month, although the seasons change the feel and the comfort of a stay.

Why the Dry Season Works
When the surrounding scrub dries out, elephants, buffalo, antelope and predators depend on the river corridor. The trees along it hold leopards, and the riverbed becomes a route for many species. Dry months also suit game drives, because tracks are firm and visibility is good. The trade-off is heat and dust, so schedule a long lunch break.
The Green Season
After rain the scrub changes colour, flowers bloom and migratory birds arrive. The reserves are quieter and lodges less busy. Animals disperse, so sightings may require more patience, and heavy rain can flood sandy riverbeds and slow transfers. Photographers often prize the soft light and green backdrop.
Heat and Clothing
Daytime temperatures are high for most of the year, with cooler mornings and evenings. Wear light, neutral clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and good sunscreen, and bring a fleece for early drives. See the packing list for details.
Planning Around the Rest of Your Trip
Samburu fits well before or after Laikipia, Mount Kenya or the Masai Mara, so seasons in those areas matter too. Compare them in the best time to visit Kenya guide and see Laikipia and Ol Pejeta for a neighbouring option.
Booking Advice
Reserve early for July to October and the festive period. The Samburu wildlife guide explains what to look for in each season, and official reserve tariffs apply year-round.
What Each Season Means for Photographers and Birders
Photographers often love the dry months for crisp light, strong contrast and wildlife concentrated along open riverbanks, while the green season delivers softer colours and dramatic skies. Birders should aim for the period after the rains, when migrants arrive and resident species display, although the dry months also bring birds to the river. Early mornings give the best light and activity in all seasons. If you can only travel in the hottest months, choose lodges with shade, a pool and relaxed midday routines. See things to do in Samburu and the birding guide for planning.
