Things to Do in Samburu: Game Drives, Cultural Visits, Birding and River Wildlife

Samburu activities include game drives along the Ewaso Ng'iro River, birding, photography, visits to Samburu communities and, at some lodges, guided walks and night drives.

The reserves are compact enough to explore thoroughly in a couple of days, and the river offers constant wildlife interest.

Many lodges extend the experience with cultural visits and extra activities outside the reserve boundaries.

This guide is part of our Uganda park trails and activities guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Game Drives

Dawn drives catch cats and elephants coming to the river, while afternoon drives offer lovely light on the dry scrub. Guides know where leopards rest and where oryx and gerenuk feed. Take binoculars. See game drives explained.

Searching

Searching for the Special Five

Making a game of finding the five characteristic species adds purpose to drives. Grevy's zebra, gerenuk and Somali ostrich often turn up on the plains, while reticulated giraffe and oryx are widespread. The Samburu wildlife guide describes each.

Samburu

Samburu Cultural Visits

The Samburu people are semi-nomadic pastoralists related to the Maasai, and visits to a community can include songs, dances, beadwork and talks about daily life. Choose visits arranged with consent and a fair benefit for the village. See Maasai culture and East Africa culture for context.

Birding

Birding

Birders can look for vulturine guineafowl, Somali bee-eaters, golden pipits, hornbills and eagles. Early morning along the river is rewarding. See the birding guide.

Walks

Walks, Night Drives and Bush Meals

Some lodges and neighbouring conservancies offer guided walks, sundowners, bush breakfasts and night drives, subject to rules. These activities reveal small details and nocturnal animals. Ask your operator what is available on your dates, and read about night drives and walking safaris.

Photography

Photography

The red earth, bright sky and golden light suit photographers. Plan around dawn and dusk, and see safari photography tips.

Sample

Sample Day in Samburu

A typical day begins with coffee before dawn and a drive along the river while the cats and elephants are active. You return to camp for breakfast and a rest through the heat, then enjoy a late lunch and perhaps a cultural visit or a short walk nearby. The afternoon drive heads out into the scrub for oryx, gerenuk and Grevy's zebra, finishing at a viewpoint for sundowners. Back at camp, evenings are spent around a fire listening for hyenas and owls. This rhythm suits most travellers, and it allows time to notice details such as tracks in the sand and birds in the doum palms. See the best time to visit Samburu and how to get to Samburu for logistics.

Responsible

Responsible Choices

Whatever you choose to do, keep a respectful distance from animals, follow your guide's instructions and avoid crowding sightings of leopards or cheetahs. Support lodges that employ local people and contribute to conservation and community projects, and ask before photographing people. These simple habits protect the wildlife and keep the experience rewarding for everyone. See responsible and conservation travel for further guidance.
