Things to Do at Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate: Cycling, Gorge Walks, Boats and Hot Springs

The great appeal of Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate is that you can do so much on your own two feet or two wheels: cycling among zebras, walking the gorge, climbing rocks and gliding past hippos in a boat.

Most Kenyan parks require you to stay in a vehicle, so Hell's Gate feels refreshingly different. The distances are manageable, the scenery is dramatic and the pace is relaxed.

A full day can include several of the activities below, and a second day adds the lake, a sanctuary and perhaps a volcano hike. Pick the mix that suits your energy.

This guide is part of our Uganda park trails and activities guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Cycling in Hell's Gate

Cycling is the signature activity, and bikes can be hired at the main gate. The main track runs across open grassland with zebras, gazelles and giraffes close by, and then continues towards the gorge and the towering rock formations. Distances are moderate, but there are some climbs, the sun is strong and the altitude is noticeable, so take water and start early. Helmets and a puncture kit are sensible, and children can usually be accommodated with the right equipment. See cycling and bike safaris in East Africa.

Walking

Walking the Gorge

A guided walk through the gorge takes you between towering red and orange cliffs, past steam vents and narrow passages that echo with the sound of your footsteps. Guides explain the geology and point out raptors, hyraxes and plants. The walk is sometimes closed after rain because of flash-flood risk, so check conditions on the day. Good footwear and a hat are essential. For safaris on foot elsewhere, see night drives and walking safaris.

Rock

Rock Climbing and Viewpoints

The park's volcanic rock formations, including tall towers that rise from the valley floor, attract climbers of different levels, and licensed guides can arrange routes and equipment. Non-climbers can simply walk to the base for photographs and views. Always use a reputable guide, as loose rock and strong sun can make conditions harder than they look.

Boat

Boat Trips and Crescent Island

Boat trips on Lake Naivasha leave from the shore, with early mornings best for hippos, fish eagles and pelicans. Many include a landing on Crescent Island for a guided walk among giraffes, zebras and wildebeest. Nearby, a lakeside conservation centre set in gardens is a popular stop for tea and for learning about the lake's history. See the wildlife guide for what to expect.

Geothermal

Geothermal Spa and Nearby Hikes

After a day of exertion, the geothermal spa near the park gives visitors a chance to soak in naturally heated water, a fitting reward in a landscape shaped by volcanic heat. Hiking enthusiasts may also add a walk on the rim of nearby Mount Longonot, a dormant volcano whose crater is a favourite day hike. For other mountain walks in the region, see East Africa mountains and hiking.

Planning

Planning Your Time

A one-day visit can cover cycling and the gorge, while two days allow a boat trip, Crescent Island and time to relax. Combine Naivasha with Lake Nakuru or the Masai Mara, and check the best time to visit before choosing dates.
