Things to Do at Lewa: Game Drives, Walks, Horse Riding, Night Drives and Conservation Visits

Lewa offers game drives, guided walks, horse and camel rides, night drives, rhino tracking and community visits, all set against the profile of Mount Kenya.

As a private conservancy, Lewa can offer more variety than a national park. Visitors can explore on wheels, on foot, on horseback or on camel, and activities can be paced to suit different ages and abilities.

Conservation is part of the experience, and many activities include time with rangers, trackers or researchers who explain how the landscape is managed.

This guide is part of our Uganda park trails and activities guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Game Drives

Morning and afternoon drives take you through open plains, acacia thickets and river valleys in search of rhinos, Grevy's zebras, elephants and predators. Guides share what they know about individual animals, and picnic breakfasts on the plains are a pleasant tradition. See game drives explained.

Night

Night Drives

Where available, night drives bring out nocturnal species that are rarely seen by day, such as genets, porcupines, bush babies and sometimes leopards. They are led by experienced guides using subdued lighting, and they add a very different atmosphere to your stay. See night drives and walking safaris.

Guided

Guided Walks

Walking with an armed guide, you notice details that a vehicle cannot offer: tracks and dung, insects, plants and the sounds of birds. Walks are paced slowly and focus on learning rather than distance. They are usually short and suit most reasonably fit adults. Always listen to your guide and keep a steady, quiet line.

Horse

Horse and Camel Riding

Lewa and nearby ranches are known for riding safaris, and horses allow you to move quietly beside giraffes, zebras and antelopes. Camel rides are a gentler way to enjoy the landscape and can be arranged for beginners. Riding experience requirements vary, so ask in advance. Plan your riding or camel experience for the morning, when the air is cooler and animals are more active. If you are comfortable in the saddle, a longer ride lets you cover more ground and reach parts of the conservancy that vehicles rarely visit. See horse safaris in Africa.

Conservation

Conservation and Community Visits

Guests can learn about rhino monitoring, anti-poaching work and the community programmes that surround the conservancy. A visit may include time at local schools, clinics or livelihood projects where the conservancy has supported neighbours. These visits help explain why Lewa works as a model. See responsible and conservation travel.

Nearby Experiences

A forest with a canopy walkway lies adjacent to the conservancy and adds a different habitat to your trip. You can also consider extending to Ol Pejeta or planning a longer circuit with the Lewa wildlife guide and best time to visit.
