Things to Do in the Aberdares: Waterfalls, Waterhole Watching, Trout Fishing and Moorland Walks

Aberdare National Park offers game viewing from lodge decks, waterfall walks, moorland hikes, trout fishing and birdwatching in cool mountain scenery.

The Aberdares reward patience and curiosity rather than long drives. Cool air, misty forests and tumbling streams create a mood unlike the savannahs, and activities are shaped by the terrain.

You can spend your time watching from a deck, walking to a waterfall or casting a line in a mountain stream, and often all three in the same stay.

This guide is part of our Uganda park trails and activities guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Watching From the Lodge

The signature experience is watching animals come to a floodlit waterhole or salt lick from a covered balcony or a lounge, with a hot drink in hand. Elephants, buffalo, rhinos, hogs and hyenas can all appear, sometimes within a few metres of the building. Some lodges have a bell or alert system that wakes guests when rare animals arrive. It is quiet, comfortable wildlife watching that suits families and older travellers. See senior and accessible safaris.

Waterfall

Waterfall Walks

Several waterfalls drop from the moorland into the forest, and guided visits include a short walk to viewpoints. The falls are most impressive after rain, when spray fills the air. Rangers accompany walkers because of the chance of meeting buffalo or elephants. Wear grippy shoes and bring a rain jacket.

Moorland

Moorland and Forest Hikes

Higher in the range, open moorland covered in tussock grass and giant heathers offers sweeping views, cool air and the chance to see eland and birds of prey. Hikes must be arranged with rangers or guides, and altitude can make exertion tiring. Learn more about mountain walks in East Africa mountains and hiking.

Trout

Trout Fishing

Streams in the Aberdares were stocked with trout long ago, and anglers can fish for them in cool, clear water. Fishing is a quiet pastime that suits visitors who prefer a slower rhythm. Permits and equipment arrangements depend on where you stay, so ask in advance, and check local rules about releasing fish. Early morning and evening are the most productive times, when the water is coolest. Even if you do not fish, walking along a stream in the quiet of the forest, with sunbirds overhead and the sound of water in the ferns, is a restful contrast to the more energetic parts of a safari. A warm jacket and waterproof boots make the experience far more comfortable.

Birdwatching

Birdwatching and Photography

The mixture of forest and moorland creates opportunities for photographing unusual highland birds, plants and misty landscapes. Dim light inside the forest calls for a fast lens or high ISO. See safari photography tips and the birding guide.

Planning

Planning Your Stay

Two nights give time for walks and for waiting patiently at the deck. Combine it with Lake Nakuru or Laikipia for open-plains game. See the wildlife guide and how to get there.
