East Africa Mountains and Hiking: Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya, Rwenzori and Elgon
East Africa's great mountains include Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya, the Rwenzori range, Mount Elgon, Mount Meru and the Virunga volcanoes, with options for every fitness level.
Hiking adds a different dimension to a safari. Some routes are demanding multi-day climbs, while others are gentle day walks through forest and farmland.
Acclimatisation and good guides are vital at altitude.

Safety
Go with licensed guides, acclimatise and carry layers.
Choosing a Climb
Fitness, time and budget decide the right mountain. Kilimanjaro is a non-technical trek but demands several days and careful acclimatisation, because altitude affects everyone regardless of fitness. Mount Kenya has a mix of trekking and technical summits. The Rwenzori Mountains are wetter and muddier, with glaciated peaks and a more remote feel. Mount Elgon and the Virunga volcanoes suit travellers who want a day or two of hiking without technical difficulty. Be honest about your experience, choose a licensed operator with trained guides and porters, and allow extra days for rest and weather.
Training and Gear
Start walking regularly with a loaded daypack several weeks before departure, and break in your boots. Pack waterproofs, warm layers, gloves, a hat, trekking poles and a good sleeping bag if the route needs one. Mornings above the tree line are cold, even near the equator. Carry water, snacks and sun protection, and drink steadily. See the packing list and health guide for medical preparation, and tell your guide at once if you feel unwell.
Best Seasons
Dry periods give clearer views and firmer trails: roughly January to March and June to October for Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya and Mount Elgon. The Rwenzori Mountains stay damp, with slightly drier windows in December to February and June to August. Always carry rain protection, because afternoon storms can form quickly.
Guides, Porters and Ethics
Licensed guides and porters are essential on the big mountains, and responsible operators pay fair wages, limit loads and provide proper clothing and food for crews. Ask how your operator treats its team before booking, and tip according to recommended guidelines. Good crews improve safety, summit chances and the whole experience. Pack out all rubbish, stay on marked paths and respect cultural sites, because several mountains hold spiritual meaning for local communities.
Combining Mountains and Safari
A hike works well at the start or end of a safari. Start with a mountain to use fresh energy and finish with wildlife, or celebrate a summit with a beach stay. Leave a rest day between big efforts, and avoid flying immediately after strenuous climbs at altitude if medical advice suggests caution.
