Highest Point in Africa and the Great Mountains of East Africa

The highest point in Africa is Uhuru Peak on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, at 5,895 metres (19,341 feet), followed by Mount Kenya and the Rwenzori Mountains.

Africa's tallest mountains are in East Africa, along the Great Rift Valley and near the equator. Kilimanjaro is a volcano, Mount Kenya is an ancient eroded volcano and the Rwenzori Mountains are a non-volcanic range with glaciers.

This page lists the main peaks and what trekking involves.

Kilimanjaro

Trekking Kilimanjaro takes five to nine days depending on the route, with altitude as the main challenge. See Kilimanjaro climbing guide, routes compared and best time and altitude sickness.

Mount

Mount Kenya and the Rwenzori

Mount Kenya offers technical and trekking routes; see Mount Kenya. The Rwenzori has multi-day hikes through moorland; see Rwenzori Mountains and mountains of Uganda.

Easier

Easier Hikes

Mount Elgon and the Virunga volcanoes offer shorter treks. See Mount Elgon and Virunga volcanoes.

Other

Other Notable Peaks

Beyond Kilimanjaro, Africa's mountains include Mount Kenya, Mount Stanley in the Rwenzori range, Mount Meru, Mount Elgon and the Ethiopian highlands. Each has its own character, ecosystems and cultural significance. The Rwenzori peaks are among the highest and most glaciated outside the Tanzania-Kenya region.

Why

Why Altitude Matters

Altitude changes how your body works. Climb slowly, hydrate and watch for headaches, nausea and dizziness. Guides are trained to respond to symptoms and may turn groups back for safety. Respecting altitude is the key to enjoying the mountains.

Climate

Climate and Ecosystems

Mountains host zones from tropical forest through moorland to alpine desert. This variety is why a single climb can feel like travelling through several climates in a few days.

Planning

Planning a Mountain Trip

Book a licensed operator, choose a route with enough days for acclimatisation and pack for cold, wet and sunny conditions. Check park fees, guide requirements and medical advice. See East Africa mountains and hiking.

Cultural

Cultural Importance

Mountains hold spiritual meaning for communities such as the Chagga on Kilimanjaro and the Bakonzo in the Rwenzori. Respecting local beliefs and guides' advice enriches the climb.

Climbing

Climbing Kilimanjaro Responsibly

Choose an operator that treats porters fairly, follows park rules and carries out waste. Pick a route with enough days for acclimatisation, pack proper gear and respect guides' decisions. Summit night is demanding, so rest well and eat enough. A slow, steady pace is the best strategy, and many climbers say the experience changes their view of what is possible.
