Best Time to Visit the Masai Mara: Month-by-Month Guide
The Masai Mara is rewarding year-round, but July to October is best for the Great Migration, while January to March and November offer fewer visitors and lush scenery.
The Mara sits on the equator at roughly 1,500 to 2,000 metres, so temperatures are mild. Rainfall shapes the grass, the animals and the access roads.
Use the month-by-month notes to match your travel dates to your priorities.

Migration Months
Wildebeest usually arrive in July and remain until October or early November, with dramatic crossings of the Mara River. Timing varies with rain, so flexibility is wise. See migration calendar.
Green Season Appeal
Between March and May, the Mara is lush and quiet, birds are abundant and lodge rates are often lower. Expect showers and some slow roads. Resident big cats remain visible, though tall grass can hide them.
Choosing Your Dates
Peak months need early booking. If you hate crowds, consider January, February or November. If you want crossings, choose August or September and stay at least three nights. See best time to visit Kenya.
Wildlife Through the Year
Even outside the migration, resident wildlife is excellent. Lions, cheetahs and leopards hunt year-round, elephants move between woodland and plains and hippos stay in the river. Young animals appear after the rains, bringing extra predator activity. Birdlife is richest in the green season, when migrants arrive and breeding plumage is at its best. Ask your guide what is happening in the weeks you visit, because local knowledge about recent kills, dens and herd movements can shape the day.
Weather and Practicalities
Daytime temperatures are pleasantly warm, and nights can be cool, especially at elevation. Showers in the rainy months are often short and heavy, followed by clear skies. Dust is more common in the dry season. Plan malaria prevention and insect protection in all months. See health guide.
Planning Around the Migration
The Great Migration is the main reason many travellers choose the Mara, and herds usually cross into the reserve in the middle of the year. River crossings are dramatic but unpredictable, so build in several days rather than one. Outside migration season, resident wildlife remains excellent, with large numbers of lions, elephants and giraffes. Crowds are heaviest when herds are present, so quieter months suit travellers who prefer privacy. Book lodges and camps early for peak months, and choose a location that suits your priorities, whether near the river or in conservancies with fewer vehicles. Your operator can advise on where the herds are likely to be when you travel.
Packing for the Season
Bring layers for cold mornings, a waterproof jacket for showers, a hat and sunscreen. See packing list.
