Cycling and Bike Safaris in East Africa: Hell's Gate, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania
East Africa offers cycling safaris where you can ride among zebras at Hell's Gate in Kenya, along the shores of Lake Kivu on the Congo Nile Trail in Rwanda and through villages and hills in Uganda.
Cycling slows the pace and brings you closer to landscapes and communities. Not every park allows bikes, because big predators are a risk, so routes are chosen carefully.
This page lists the best places to ride and what to know before you go.
This guide is part of our Uganda park trails and activities guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Safety and Gear
Wear a helmet, carry water and sun protection and ride with a guide. Roads can be rough.
Fitness and Equipment
Routes vary from flat lakeside paths to steep, rocky climbs. Choose rides that suit your fitness, and train with back-to-back days if planning a multi-day trail. Operators may provide mountain bikes, helmets and repair kits. Carry water, sunscreen and a rain jacket, because weather changes quickly.
Respecting People and Wildlife
Greet villagers you pass, ask before taking photographs and slow down near children and livestock. In areas where animals roam, follow your guide's instructions closely. Do not cycle in parks where large predators or elephants are a danger unless a ranger leads the ride.
Cycling Seasons
Dry months give firmer trails and better visibility. Rainy periods turn tracks muddy and slippery. Start rides early to avoid midday heat.
Community Rides
Village routes offer chances to meet farmers, craftspeople and schoolchildren, and visit markets and coffee plantations. Local guides explain culture and crops. Support community enterprises by buying drinks and crafts along the way, and ask permission before photographing people.
Support and Logistics
Choose rides with a support vehicle, spare bikes and a first-aid kit. Check that guides know the area and carry radios or phones. Ask about route difficulty, daily distances and whether luggage is carried.
