Scuba Diving
Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia have reefs and walls, and Kenya's Diani and Watamu offer shore and boat dives. See Mnemba Island and Pemba Island.
Preparing for a Race
Altitude, heat and uneven roads make East African races harder than their distances suggest. Arrive several days early to adjust, drink plenty and train on hills. Register through official event sites, read the entry rules and book accommodation early, because race weekends fill hotels. Many runners add a safari before or after the event, which gives time for muscles to recover.
Dive Planning
Choose dive centres that are certified by recognised training agencies and ask about safety briefings, equipment condition and group sizes. Water temperatures are warm, visibility changes with season and tides, and currents can be strong around some islands. Do not fly within the recommended interval after diving, so schedule diving before safari flights rather than after. Travel insurance should include diving cover.
Making It a Holiday
Pair race weekends with game drives, island time or gorilla treks. Build in recovery days and avoid strenuous hikes right after a marathon. Divers can plan reef days after safaris, which makes for a relaxing finish to a trip.
Marine Life and Conservation
Reefs off Zanzibar, Pemba, Mafia, Diani and Watamu hold coral gardens, turtles, rays and schools of colourful fish, with seasonal whale shark sightings in some areas. Respect marine parks, avoid touching coral, never chase animals and choose operators who follow conservation rules. Reef-safe sunscreen reduces damage, and responsible dive centres support local conservation initiatives.
Travel Insurance
Insurance should cover racing, diving and medical evacuation. Read exclusions carefully and disclose planned activities. Keep emergency numbers handy.
Travel Tips for Active Visitors
Pack running shoes, hydration gear, dive logbooks and certifications. Arrange gear rental where possible. Eat well, rest and acclimatise. Respect local customs and conditions, and follow event or dive centre rules. Combining physical challenges with relaxation makes a balanced trip.
