Kabale Town Guide: Terraced Hills, Lake Bunyonyi and the Gateway to Bwindi's Southern Sectors
Kabale is a cool, hilly market town in Kigezi, south-western Uganda, which serves as the springboard for Lake Bunyonyi, the southern sectors of Bwindi and the road into Rwanda.
The surrounding country is among the most densely cultivated and scenic in Uganda, its steep hills carved into terraces that glow green after rain. Mist drifts across the ridges in the mornings, and the air is noticeably cooler than elsewhere in the country.
This guide explains how Kabale works as a base and what to see around it.
This guide is part of our Uganda districts and towns guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

The Kigezi Landscape
Kabale lies in the heart of Kigezi, a region sometimes compared to the Alps for its steep, terraced slopes and cool climate. Farmers grow potatoes, beans, peas and sorghum on every available hillside, and the patchwork can be breathtaking from a ridge road. The town itself is a working centre with shops, markets and banks, not a resort, and it makes a practical stop on a long journey. For the broader region, read the Uganda travel guide and the mountains of Uganda page.
Lake Bunyonyi
The great attraction near Kabale is Lake Bunyonyi, a beautiful lake studded with islands and fringed by terraces. Visitors canoe, swim in the cleared safe spots, walk the shoreline and watch birds. Many travellers use the lake as a rest stop between gorilla treks, and some prefer to stay there rather than in town. See Lake Bunyonyi activities and where to stay at Lake Bunyonyi for details. The lake is a short drive from the town, so day visits are easy.
Echuya Forest and Walks
On the hills near Kabale, Echuya Forest Reserve offers quiet walks and birding in a highland forest rarely visited by tourists. Local guides can lead hikes that suit a few hours, with possible sightings of forest birds and montane vegetation. Kabale is also a useful base for cultural visits to farming communities, where you can learn about local food, traditions and the work of terrace farming. Ask your operator to arrange visits that benefit the community and follow respectful photographic etiquette.
Gateway to Bwindi and Rwanda
From Kabale, roads lead to the Ruhija and Rushaga areas of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, as well as the Buhoma area by a longer route, depending on your lodge and permit. See Bwindi trekking sectors to decide which area suits you, and Bwindi to Lake Bunyonyi for the transfer. Kabale also lies on the main road towards the Rwandan border, described in Kabale to Kigali, and towards Kisoro on the Kabale to Kisoro route. Always confirm border arrangements with your operator.
Where to Stay
Kabale itself offers town hotels and guesthouses of varying standards, useful for an overnight stop. Most visitors prefer a lodge or camp at Lake Bunyonyi, where the setting is far more restful, or a lodge near their gorilla trekking sector. Ask about heating, hot water and blankets, because evenings are cool, and about transport times to the park gate. Budget travellers will find basic rooms and island camps, while couples can choose lakeside rooms with views. See budget hotels and guesthouses for guidance.
Weather and Packing
Kabale is cool for much of the year, with rain possible in any month and the heaviest falls in the wet seasons. Mist is common in the early morning. Pack a fleece or warm jacket, a waterproof layer and comfortable walking shoes. For gorilla trekking conditions in different seasons, read Bwindi in the dry season and in the rainy season. A packing list helps you prepare.
