Kasese Town Guide: Rwenzori Foothills, Queen Elizabeth and the Western Uganda Hub

Kasese is a bustling town at the foot of the Rwenzori Mountains and a practical base for hikes in the Mountains of the Moon and for wildlife in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Set on a wide plain between the mountains and the park, Kasese is more of a working hub than a tourist destination. It has shops, supplies and good road links, and on clear mornings the snow-fed peaks appear above the town.

This guide explains how to use Kasese in a western Uganda itinerary.

This guide is part of our Uganda districts and towns guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Why Kasese Matters

Kasese is the nearest large town to the Rwenzori trailheads, so mountain trekkers often spend the night before and after a hike here. It also lies on the northern edge of Queen Elizabeth National Park, close to the Kazinga Channel and the lakeshore plains. A traveller combining trekking, wildlife and crater lakes will find the town a convenient pivot. Read the Kasese to Rwenzori trailheads route for the mountain approach and the Rwenzori Mountains guide for the park.

The

The Mountains of the Moon

The Rwenzori range rises steeply above the plain, and its high peaks carry glaciers and mist-covered moorland. Treks range from short day walks to multi-day circuits, with changing vegetation from forest to giant heather and lobelia. Guides and porters are required and can be arranged through your operator. Read about the central circuit trek and where to stay near the Rwenzoris. Even a short walk gives a flavour of the range, and cloud often clears in the early morning, so plan to start early.

Queen

Queen Elizabeth and the Plains

South of the town, the park offers game drives, the famous launch cruise on the Kazinga Channel and, further on, the tree-climbing lions of Ishasha. Birders and photographers find the area especially rewarding; see birding in Queen Elizabeth. Kasese is a convenient overnight stop before or after these activities, and the roads between the town and the park gates are generally straightforward, although you should always confirm current conditions with your operator.

Getting

Getting to Kasese

The town is reached by a long scenic road journey from Kampala, usually via Mbarara or Fort Portal, with a stop for lunch and viewpoints. The routes are covered in Kampala to Queen Elizabeth and Fort Portal to Queen Elizabeth. Domestic flights may be available to a nearby airstrip, which shortens the journey; check current schedules and baggage rules with your operator. From Kasese, many itineraries continue south to Bwindi; see Kasese to Bwindi via Ishasha.

Where

Where to Stay

Kasese has hotels and guesthouses suited to an overnight stop, ranging from simple to comfortable. Outside town, lodges near the mountains, along the channel and on the park edge give a more scenic base. Ask about hot water, mosquito nets, laundry for muddy trekking gear and whether packed breakfasts can be prepared for early departures. Our hotels in Kasese page and the Queen Elizabeth lodges page offer more guidance.

Practical

Practical Tips

The town is hot in the lowlands and cool at altitude, so pack for both. Use sun protection and insect repellent, carry cash for small purchases and keep valuables secure. Malaria prevention matters in this area, so follow the guidance in vaccines and malaria prevention. For wider planning, see the driving distances between parks page and itinerary ideas.
