Kigali to Rusizi: Across the Hills to the Southern End of Lake Kivu
Rusizi sits at the southern tip of Lake Kivu and is reached from Kigali by a long road through Huye and Nyungwe or along the lakeshore.
Rwanda is small but hilly, so even short distances take time. Rusizi is a border town and a useful base for Nyungwe.
This page explains the options. See also the Rusizi guide and where to stay in Rusizi.
This guide is part of our Uganda month-by-month and seasonal guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Route via Huye and Nyungwe
The road runs south to Huye, then through Nyungwe forest to Rusizi. See Kigali to Huye and Kigali to Nyungwe.
What to Book
Driver, stops and accommodation.
Preparation
Carry water, snacks, a light waterproof jacket and a warm layer for the forest section, where mist and cool air are common even on sunny days.
Why Visit Rusizi
Rusizi lies on the Ruzizi River where Lake Kivu drains towards the Congolese border, and the town is a practical base for Nyungwe, Lake Kivu's southern shore and the border markets. It is warmer and lower than the hills above, with a lake-and-hill setting that rewards a short stay. Visitors can walk by the water, visit local markets and enjoy fresh fish. See the Rusizi guide for sights and services.
Timing and Pace
The drive is a long day in any direction, and the hills mean many bends. Leave Kigali early, plan lunch in Huye or Kibuye and avoid driving after dark. A night in Huye or near Nyungwe makes the trip easier. If you plan to track chimpanzees in Nyungwe, sleep close to the park to meet the early start. See Nyungwe itineraries.
What to Prepare
Carry water, snacks, a light waterproof jacket and some small cash. Keep your passport accessible because police checkpoints occur on main roads. Mobile coverage is generally good along the main routes but can be patchy in the forest. See Rwanda practical information.
Seasons
Rain can slow the road, particularly in forest sections with mist. The drier months are easier. See the Nyungwe best-time guide.
A Sample Two-Day Plan
Day one leaves Kigali after breakfast, stops in Huye for the National Museum of Rwanda and lunch, then continues through Nyungwe's forest road with viewpoints and arrives in Rusizi in the late afternoon. Day two can explore the lakeshore and the market, or head back into Nyungwe for early activities. Travellers who prefer the lake take the Kibuye route instead and enjoy shoreline scenery, with a night at Kibuye before the final stretch. See the Kibuye guide and Rwanda museums and heritage sites.
Border and Safety Notes
Rusizi lies close to the Democratic Republic of the Congo border and the crossing is for those with the right documents and a clear plan. Most visitors do not cross, and should stay on the Rwandan side. Check current travel advice from your own government and ask your operator about conditions before you go. Keep your passport with you, follow local guidance and travel in daylight.
What to Book and Ask
Hire a driver familiar with the hill roads and ask about the planned stops, the vehicle type and the pick-up time. Confirm where you will sleep, whether lunch is included and whether Nyungwe activities are booked for the following morning, since chimpanzee tracking starts early and needs advance arrangements. Ask your operator about the current condition of the forest road and any works that could slow the day. A flexible plan with a buffer for weather is wise in the hills.
Who This Route Suits
The route suits travellers who want to see the south and west of Rwanda by road, combining Huye, Nyungwe and Lake Kivu in a loop. It is less suited to anyone with a very short trip, who may prefer to fly or to concentrate on one area. Families with young children may prefer the shorter legs and overnight stops. See the Lake Kivu itinerary and the Kivu, Nyungwe and Volcanoes combination guide.
Who It Suits
Travellers linking Kivu and Nyungwe. See Lake Kivu.
