Kigali to Kibuye: The Road to Lake Kivu's Quiet Shore

Kibuye, also called Karongi, sits on a bay of Lake Kivu and is reached from Kigali by a scenic road through the hills, usually in a morning or afternoon of driving.

Kibuye is Lake Kivu at its calmest, with islands, wooded peninsulas and a relaxed pace that works well after gorilla trekking or before a long forest day. The route from the capital passes through lively market towns and mile after mile of terraced hillside.

Here is how to organise the journey, what to see en route and where the lake stop fits in your plan.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

The Road West

The route leaves Kigali, runs through Muhanga and then climbs and drops through the hills towards the lake. It is a paved road, with long winding sections where drivers slow down for bends and trucks. As you approach the lake, the landscape opens into views of water and islands. The journey is more about scenery than speed, and many travellers say that the first glimpse of Lake Kivu is a highlight of their trip. For the lake itself, see Lake Kivu.

Stops

Stops Worth Making

Break the drive at a viewpoint, a roadside market or a small coffee stop. The hills around the lake are coffee country, and some washing stations welcome visitors in season. Read Rwanda coffee and tea tours for what a visit involves. Take care when photographing people and ask before you point a camera at anyone. Use Rwanda culture and etiquette as a guide.

Why

Why Kibuye

Kibuye offers gentle activities: boat trips among the islands, kayaking, swimming in suitable spots, lakeside walks and long sunset views. It is a place to slow down, not to tick off sights. Visitors who want a longer adventure sometimes follow parts of the lakeshore trails by bike or on foot, using local guides. Choose activities with your operator and check conditions on the day.

How

How Long to Stay

One night is enough to enjoy the lake, but two nights lets you unwind and take a boat trip without rushing. If you are heading south to the forest, the lakeshore road continues towards Rusizi and Nyungwe; see Rusizi to Nyungwe. If you are heading north, Kigali to Rubavu describes the northern end of the lake.

Season

Season and Conditions

The road is passable all year, but rain can bring slow traffic and mist on the hills. Dry months give clearer views over the lake. Pack a light layer for evenings on the water and sun protection for the day. See the best time to visit Rwanda.

Practical

Practical Tips

Start early to arrive in good light, carry water and snacks, and keep a little cash for roadside purchases. If you are prone to travel sickness, sit in the front and take advice before leaving. Always ask your operator which boats and activities are licensed and well maintained.

Linking

Linking It With Other Stops

A typical loop runs Kigali, Musanze for gorillas, Rubavu, Kibuye and then south to Nyungwe before returning to Kigali. See Rwanda safari itineraries and Gishwati-Mukura access for forest options near the lake.
